Senior Provincials Report
Thu Feb 04, 2010
The Alberta Senior Provincials were held from January 29-31 in Medicine Hat and OSC sent 28 swimmers to compete. This meet was approximately one month earlier into the training cycle than usual which presented the added challenge of racing the province’s best in the middle of hard training.
The meet was tough but the swimmers got better and better throughout the weekend with some highlights like individual medals from Natasha Fung (4 Gold, 1 Bronze), Deanna Matthews (1 Gold, 1 Bronze), Braeden Newton (1 Silver, 1 Bronze), Kristan Kushlyk (2 Bronze), Madison Mills (1 Silver), Luke Peddie (1 Silver), Lori Layne Kremer (1 Bronze), and Bruno Sharpe (1 Bronze).
We were also able to win medals in the relays, including Gold in the Women’s 400 Medley (Deanna, Kristan, Lori Layne, Natasha), Silver in the Women’s 800 Free Relay (Madison, Natasha, Deanna, Kristan), Women’s 400 Free Relay (Natasha, Deanna, Lori Layne, Madison), and Men’s 400 Medley (Bruno, Braeden, Luke, Hunter Balch), and Bronze in the Men’s 400 Free Relay (Bruno, Hunter, Luke, Braeden).
At the end of the weekend the team placed 3rd overall in the team standings. Congrats to all of our swimmers on a good meet and now we can look for bigger and better things at the Westerns in a few weeks! Go O!
Blue Bears Report
Tue Feb 02, 2010
OSC hit the water competition style for the first time in 2010 this past weekend at the Blue Bears Invitational, and not even a few technical glitches prevented OSC from performing at the highest level! The coaches are very pleased with the performances of all the swimmers and are super psyched about the upcoming provincial swim meets.
Some outstanding performances are the new qualifiers for Age Group Trials. Dana Godley and Jack Forest both qualified and will be joining their teammates at the end of February in Sherwood Park. Congratulations swimmers! Other qualifiers were Rian Perrott who got two new A times in her 1500m freestyle and 50m freestyle events! Whoever said distance swimmers can’t sprint? Congratulations to Rian!
The young guys from JAG and OW did a great job of getting those hard earned best times in their events. Coach Carolyn was especially excited that her OW's managed to pull of 95% best times as a group! The other swimmers all took off time, and some of the greatest improvements were seen in the distance events on Friday night and the 400’s Saturday and Sunday. We also had a few swimmers post 100% best times, and they are Brittany Zabolotniuk, Laura Lafrance and Samantha Grossenbacher from Youth Development. Congratulations girls!
Our senior groups swam well this weekend too. There aren’t any new qualifiers to mention, but the coaches are very happy with the execution of good skills and the number of best times accumulated. It is always great to see our top end programs performing in front of our younger swimmers. Seeing such performances can really inspire them so keep up the great work seniors!
One last thing to mention, which should get everyone excited, is that many of our swimmers are within a second or less from making either A or B times (not to mention the senior swimmers aiming for Westerns and Age Group Nationals). So at the next swim meet, our OSC Time Trial, be sure to make LOTS of noise for these swimmers as we want everyone to succeed and reach their goals.
Great weekend everyone!
