Olympians lead Team Alberta with 16 Medals at North American
Challenge Cup |
August 13, 2007 |
In the 1st Annual North American Challenge Cup, held
this past weekend from August 10-12 at the 1984 Olympic Pool in Los
Angeles, California, 5 OSC swimmers represented Team Alberta in a
truly impressive display of fast swimming and medal hauling.
The meet itself was an age group meet, created to be a tri-meet
between the best 18-year-old and younger swimmers from Mexico,
Southern California, and Canada. Alberta joined the competition as
invited guests. With Team Mexico, Team SoCal and Team Canada
expected to do most of the winning at the meet, it must have been
quite a surprise for them to watch the proud Albertans reach the
medal podium in nearly every event. Team Canada will certainly need
to select more Albertans, and especially Olympians, when they go
back to this meet next summer!
Each of the 5 OSC swimmers came away from the meet with at least 2
medals, and that accomplishment cannot be understated. These
swimmers were absolute leaders at the meet, let alone for Team
Alberta. Lori-Layne Kremer led the medal count with 4 individual
medals, winning both butterfly events, and taking bronze in both
IM's. The IM swims, both huge best times, really demonstrate how
hard Lori-Layne has worked to become a national-level swimmer in all
four strokes. Deanna Matthews had 3 individual medals, taking silver
in the 400 IM and bronze in the 200 Back and 200 IM. This was
Deanna's fifth high-calibre competition in the last six weeks, and
she continues to perform consistently well. Lindsay Morton took gold
in the 400 IM and silver in the 200 IM, both with great best times.
Competing in the most senior age group at the meet, Lindsay is one
of the few 17+-year-old girls who continues to improve regularly,
and is already one of top female IMer's in Canada. Nathan Kindrachuk
won the gold medal in both breaststroke events. In the last two
weeks Nathan has stormed onto the national scene to become one of
Canada's top young male prospects in breaststroke and IM. And
finally, Josh Au took the silver medal in the 200 butterfly in an
incredibly fast best time. Josh actually dropped 2 full seconds from
his previous best to come within 1/10th of a second of winning the
event. To top off the medal count, Deanna and Lori-Layne were both a
part of a silver medal-winning 400 Medley relay team, Nathan
Kindrachuk won a silver medal on his 400 Medley relay team, and Josh
added a bronze in his 400 Medley relay team. To browse all the
results, you can look online at the
North American Challenge Cup real-time results website.
That marks the end of the season for all OSC swimmers! We had
another hugely successful year, full of best times, and records,
Provincial and National team selections, and we showed tremendous
potential for even greater swimming in the years to come.
Congratulations to Lori-Layne, Deanna, Lindsay, Nathan and Josh on a
terrific meet! |

OSC Swimmers highlight
Western Canada Summer Games |
August 8, 2007 |
Western
Canada Summer Games were a huge success for Team Alberta, coming
within 3 medals of Team BC for tops at the competition.
Highlighting the 45 medals earned by Team Alberta were the 4
swimmers selected to the team from the Olympian Swim Club, who were
a part of 13 podium finishes (11 individual & 2 relay). The
performances were exceptionally fast, and it was exciting to see the
OSC swimmers leading the way for Alberta.
Justin Selner was the first Olympian to swim at the meet, and in his
400 Free placed in the top 8, a placing that he topped in the 1500
Free where he finished in 6th place. Nathan Kindrachuk smashed his
own best times, and the competition, by taking a gold and silver in the
breaststroke events and taking bronze in both IM's. Josh Au
took silver in both butterfly events and added another silver in 100
backstroke. And finally, Deanna Matthews swept the gold medals in
all of the backstroke and IM events. Deanna was also a part of a
gold medal in the Women's 400m Medley Relay, while Nathan and Josh
earned silver medals in the Men's 400m Medley Relay.
On a club note, these 4 swimmers also combined to break 9 Senior
Club records. Nathan Kindrachuk broke the 100 Breaststroke record
twice, Josh Au broke the 100 Backstroke twice and the 200 Butterfly,
and Deanna Matthews broke the 100 Backstroke twice, the 200
Backstroke, and the 200 IM.
Congratulations Justin, Nathan, Josh and Deanna! |

Day 3 & 4: Strong finish for OSC at
Canadian Senior Nationals |
July 31, 2007 |
On day 3 of Canadian Senior Nationals, Lori-Layne
Kremer continued to highlight the Olympian results as she made
another consolation final, this time in the 100 Butterfly. Her
morning swim was a best time of 1:04, and her first time under 1:05,
but she followed that up at night with an incredible swim of 1:03.65
to finish 2nd in the consolation final and10th overall in the
country. Deanna Matthews also made a consolation final, hers in 200
backstroke, and finished with a time of 2:21. This was just off of
her best ever time, and good enough for 13th place in the country.
Day 4 saw some new faces making highlights for OSC. First to swim in
finals was Mike Vanden Ham in the 50 Freestyle. Mike swam an
impressive best time in the morning of 24.11, just 0.12 shy of the
senior club record. In finals, Mike swam another solid race,
finishing with another 24-second performance in 16th place in the
country. The final race for Olympians this weekend was the final of
the men's 1500 Freestyle, in which Doug Rawlick swam a great, tough
race to finish in 6th place.
With another meet passed, OSC once again congratulates those
swimmers who have finished their season and are now ready to take a
few weeks break from training and racing. It has been an excellent
year for the Olympian Swim Club, and all swimmers should share in
this success.
For a select few, the peak of the season is coming up over the next
2 weeks, as OSC sends swimmers on the Alberta Provincial team to
Western Canada Games in Strathcona County, Alberta, and then more
swimmers on the Alberta Provincial team to the North American
Challenge Cup in Los Angeles, California. Good luck to all the
swimmers participating in these competitions! |

Day 2: More big swims for OSC at
Canadian Senior Nationals |
July 27, 2007 |
Olympian swimmers continued to produce impressive
results on Day 2 of Canadian Senior Nationals in Calgary. With the
400 IM and men's 800 Free on this day, OSC was ready for another big
one.
In Finals tonight, the 800 Freestyle led things off and Olympian
swimmer Doug Rawlick produced OSC's first top-8 swim of the week.
Doug was close to his best ever time from Montreal last week, and that was good enough to
place him 7th overall in the country.
The 400 IM was a strong event for the OSC girls, as we put 2
swimmers into the consolation final. In the pressure of the final,
Deanna Matthews and Lindsay Morton swam great races, each taking off
plenty of time from their morning swim. Deanna swam a best time of
4:59, breaking 5:00 for the first time, and winning the consolation
final by over 8 seconds. Lindsay also took 4 seconds off of her
morning swim to go 5:07 and finish 5th in the consolation final.
Tomorrow should be another good day for OSC, so keep your eyes on
the results and check back here for the highlights.

Day 1: OSC off to a good start at
Canadian Senior Nationals |
July 27, 2007 |
Canadian Senior Nationals began yesterday, and 9
Olympian Swim Club swimmers returned from their stellar performances
last week at the National Age Group Championships in Montreal to
compete in the big show down in Calgary.
The first day highlights were a couple of second swims in the 200
Butterfly by Lori-Layne Kremer and Josh Au. This is Lori's first
ever nationals, and in her first ever swim at a senior national
championship she qualified for her first ever second swim. In the
evening session, Lori won the consolation final with a huge best
time of 2:18.88. What a great way to start off the meet! Josh also
qualified for the consolation final and finished just over his
personal best to finish 12th overall.
You can follow the team results at the
Canadian Senior Nationals website, or check our homepage
for more updates as the week continues.

New Provincial Record for 13-14 Girls 400 Free Relay!! |
July 25, 2007 |
Last
weekend at the Canadian Age Group National Championships in
Montreal, Quebec, the Olympian Swim Club relay team of Lori-Layne
Kremer, Natasha Fung, Christine Kemp, and Madison Mills broke a
9-year-old Alberta Provincial Record for the 13-14 Girls 4x100
Freestyle Relay by over 2 seconds. The previous record of 4:06.73
belonged to the Red Deer Catalina Swim Club.
The new record was a major highlight from the Age
Group Nationals, and once again demonstrates just how great these
girls are.
In fact, the three fastest split times from our girls
were only matched by one other 13-14-year-old girl from all the rest
of the relay teams combined. Great swimming, girls, and
congratulations on a new Provincial Record!
Our girls' splits went as follows:
| Lori-Layne Kremer |
30.21 |
1:03.21 |
| Natasha Fung |
28.89 |
1:00.37 |
| Christine Kemp |

Olympians Finish 8th Overall at
National Age Group Championships |
July 25, 2007 |
The final results are in, and OSC
managed to move up one extra spot from the Open Water day to finish
in 8th position overall. This year's meet had over 1,500 swimmers,
over 500 more than last year in Calgary, in large part due to the
full participation of all of the eastern Canadian teams. Last year
OSC finished as the 4th-placed team from western Canada, and this
year OSC has moved up to 2nd-place overall in the West. And, from a
high performance standpoint we also doubled our number of event wins
from last year from 2 Gold medals (1 relay, 1 individual) in 2006,
to 4 Gold medals (all individual) in 2007.
Beyond the overall placings and medals, the Olympians had a great
time all weekend going an incredible number of best times and
cheering on their teammates to do the same. The rainy start to the
competition really showed the character of our team, when not only
did OSC continue to swim best times while other teams faded in the
cold, but our swimmers got even louder and did some of the best
cheering ever at a national competition. There were plenty of looks
and comments from around the pool expressing either envy or utter
confusion at how our team was able to look so good at all times.
For most of our swimmers the season is now finished, with a few
carrying on to Senior Nationals in Calgary (beginning tomorrow!) and
then onto the Provincial tour teams going to Western Canada Games in
Strathcona County and the North American Challenge Cup in Los
Angeles. Check the website often over the next few weeks to read
highlights of the Olympian performances still to come this summer.
Congratulations, Olympians!

OSC Finishes 2nd Overall at Age Group Provincials; 3rd at Seniors |
July 12, 2007 |
It was a great weekend
of racing for the Olympian Swim Club at the Age Group and Senior
Provincials in Edmonton. For the first time since the mid-1980's,
the Olympian Swim Club went into the final day of competition at Age
Group Provincials in the lead for Overall Team Scoring. Going into
the final session with a 30-point lead, it came down to the final
events of the weekend to decide the team scoring championship, with
the Cascade Swim Club of Calgary eventually pulling ahead to win by
a score of 4600 to 4570. The Olympian Swim Club did hold on to win
the Overall Girls Team Scoring championship.
On the Senior side, OSC once again was in a position it had not been
in since the mid-1980's, when after 2 days of competition OSC was
sitting in 2nd place in Overall Team Scoring behind the powerful
UCSC Senior team. Once again, the Cascade Swim Club of Calgary
chipped away at the OSC lead, and OSC eventually finished in 3rd
spot in the Overall Team Scoring championship. This was an
especially impressive result when you consider that OSC only has 2
athletes over the age of 18.
These results once again show the Olympian Swim Club to be the team
to beat in Edmonton, and a team still rising through the ranks in
Alberta. The 2 big Calgary teams are certainly feeling the pressure
now that OSC has shown this quality of performance with consistent
improvement for 2 straight years. Congratulations to all OSC
swimmers, and good luck in the rest of your summer! |

One more medal for OSC from the Open Water 5-km at
National Age Group Championships |
July 23, 2007 |
The final day of competition was this morning at the
Olympic Rowing Basin in Montreal, literally just outside the
backdoor of our dormitory "the Orphanage" (a slight mistranslation
perpetrated on the first day that just kind of stuck...). We woke up
around 7:00am and stepped outside into a beautiful morning, already
sunny and mid-20's, and looking out over possibly the most
attractive open water venue in North America. The 13 Olympian
athletes were the biggest team participating in the event, with most
of our swimmers participating in either their first or second ever
open water swim.
The highlight of the day was another medal for an OSC swimmer, this
time for Shannon Johnston, who finished in second place. This was an
outstanding result in her first ever attempt in a national 5-km Open
Water event.
Full results were not available immediately following the event, so
the final team standings are still not available. At the beginning
of the day, Olympians were sitting in 9th place overall at the
competition, and just 35 points behind the 8th place team. The team
result also has OSC ranked as the 2nd team in Western Canada behind
the Cascade Swim Club in Calgary. Our performances over the last 5
days definitely created a little buzz around the pool deck, as
spectators from around the country witnessed Olympian after Olympian
rise up to the occasion with impressive results. Whether it was
coping with the bitter cold and rain of days 1 & 2, the heat of days
3 & 4, the long sessions every day, or just the pressures of being
at one of the peak competitions of the summer, OSC swimmers
constantly outperformed their competition in heats and finals. It
was a great and fun team effort, and every Olympian should be proud
of the great success achieved by our swimmers.

Three individual medals cap off a big Day 4 at
National Age Group Championships |
July 22, 2007 |
The warmest day on the pool deck also ended up being
the hottest day for OSC swimmers as we continued to pound out some
amazing best times, this time in the heat.
The day began with the 400 IM and 3 swimmers in the final.
Lori-Layne Kremer started the night off on an exciting note by
dropping 7 seconds from her morning time to finish with a 5:07.4 -
good for a silver medal and also Lori's first-ever national
qualifying time in a non-butterfly event. Deanna Matthews followed a
few heats later with a big best time and a silver medal of her own
with a 5:01. Callum Lavoie was the third Olympian in the 400 IM
finals, bettering his time from preliminaries to finish at 4:46.5
and ninth place.
Next was the 50 Fly, where Shannon Johnston swam to a new 11-12
Girls Club record with a time of 31.65. The time beat out the
2-year-old record of her teammate Christine Kemp - an amazing swim
that placed her sixth in the final. Lori-Layne was also right back
up on the blocks after her 400 IM to swim a 30.00 in the 50 Fly and
finish in seventh place.
Third event up was the 100 Freestyle, with Natasha Fung in the
finals. Natasha bettered her morning swim with a 1:00.91 and
finished in ninth place.
The 200 Breast was the next event and a big one for OSC with 4
swimmers in the finals. Kristan Kushlyk started the event off with a
life-time best time of 2:48.20 and a sixth-place finish. Natasha
Fung was up again for this event, and pulled out the 'gutterball'
strategy when she rolled right passed everyone in the middle of the
pool from lane 1 to grab the bronze medal. She also went a personal
best-ever time with a 2:41.36. Deanna Matthews had her second swim
of the night as she matched her morning swim time and finished in
fourth position. Finally, Nathan Kindrachuk became one of the big
boys of breaststroke in the country as he raced in the final to a
fifth-place finish, just 2/100's shy of the fourth spot.
The final event of the day was the 800 Freestyle. Doug Rawlick was
the lone swimmer in finals, and he swam to a best time and
fourth-place finish with a time of 8:31. As a time-final event, we
also had several swimmers from the preliminary session knock out
some excellent top-10 finishes. Kelly Delorme had her second big
best time in the last 2 weeks as she took off 8 more seconds to go
9:59.2 and finish in ninth place. Madison Mills also went a best
time as she negative-split a time of 9:31 for fifth position.
Christine Kemp finished just behind Madi with a 12-second personal
best effort in a time of 9:42 and just missed a top-10 finish in
eleventh spot. And that's just the beginning...! Next was Dana
Armstrong, who swam a big best time of 9:15, qualifying her for the
national standard in the event and placing her eighth. Nicholas
Tworek took down his own best time by 18 seconds, on his way to
taking down half the field and his first-ever Western Championships
qualifying standard (by over 5 seconds!) with a time of 9:10.97 and
eleventh place overall. Finally, Justin Selner added another best
time to his weekend with a 9:04 performance, which placed him just
outside the top-10 in eleventh place.
Just the Open Water 5-km race is left to go, with 13 OSC swimmers
participating. Olympians are the biggest participating club in the
Open Water event this year, so we will certainly have some more
great news tomorrow when we take over the 5-km event. It promises to
be another great session tomorrow at the National Age Group
Championships in Montreal - stay tuned for the rest of our results!

Five more medals on Day 3 at
National Age Group Championships! |
July 21, 2007 |
And the sun came out and the swimming was fast . . .
Day three was a much brighter day with the sun high in the sky and
the Olympians just as fast. Our day started with the 200 Free where
Christine Kemp made it through to finals and her combined
improvement from her prelim and final performances was 6 seconds.
Her 2:10.70 placed her 5th. Colin Bull broke 2 minutes for the first
time and narrowly missed making yet another top ten finish. Natasha
Fung and Nathan Kindrachuk both made second swims in 100m Breast and
both moved up at night. Natasha went from 9th to 5th and Nathan from
6th to 5th. Deanna’s 200 Backstroke was another race that came down
to the 100ths of a second. Deanna swam her fastest ever ‘outdoor’
200 back and finished 2nd only 19/100th behind first place.
Lori-Layne Kremer’s 100m butterfly was again a nail-biter of a
finish with Lori going a best time of 1:04.40 and finishing 2nd.
Joshua Au went from Zero (lane Zero) to Hero in the final. His 9th
place prelim swim was enough for Josh to out turn and out finish
most of the field for a bronze medal. Our 14-year-old girls 4x100
Medley Relay was the closest race of the meet. The OSC Relay
finished 2nd in a race that could have gone either way. Our Men’s
relay from the morning was fast enough to place us 4th over all – a
real shock for some of those teams at night.
Sunday is our most eventful day with over 60 individual races to be
swum… how many in finals??? You’ll have to wait and see!

Second and third
National Age Group Championship Golds! |
July 20, 2007 |
Day Two here at Age Group Nationals
was highlighted by lots of rain, more fast swimming, and our second
and third National Age Group Golds! All morning the rain was pouring
down, but that didn’t stop the OSC swimmers from posting some great
results. The swimmers showed their mental toughness by not worrying
about the weather and just doing what they are here to do, race
fast. There were lots of cases where the swimmers took their races
out fast and won heats in great best times. This resulted in us
having 9 individual finals tonight.
The first race of the evening was the 200 fly where we had 4 swims.
Lori-Layne Kremer was up first and swam an awesome race for 2:20.90,
a win by over 4 seconds, a new club record, and her first National
Age Group Championship. Next was Maura Lavoie swimming only her 2nd
200 fly of this season (the first was this morning!) and dropping
her best time by another 2 seconds for 2:27. Lindsay Morton swam in
the next heat and went a 2:24, a best by 1 second. Josh Au was our
last flyer and swam a tough race, just missing out on a medal for
4th place and almost a best time of 2:07.
The next event was the 100 back and our only swimmer was Deanna
Matthews. She didn’t disappoint, with a come from behind victory in
1:06.1, winning by a mere 2 one hundredths of a second, for her
second NAG Championship in as many days.
Nathan Kindrachuk swam the 50 breast with some serious speed and
dropped down to 30.9 from his previous best from the morning of
31.4. He also had a tight finish and ended up in fourth position.
The last individual race was the 400 free where we had Erik Olson
swimming the 16 year olds final and came in for 10th after going out
really hard. Colin Bull and Doug Rawlick swam the 17-18 final, and
came 5th and 6th respectively, both going 4:09’s, and both breaking
4:10 for the first time!
The last event was the 400 free relay and our girls didn’t
disappoint. The 13-14 relay of Lori-Layne, Natasha Fung, Christine
Kemp, and Madison Mills had a great race and just got touched out,
finishing in second place. This race was extra special as the girls
broke the provincial record by over 2 seconds in the event!
Hopefully the weather will turn around tomorrow, but either way I’m
sure we’re in for some more great racing from these great young
athletes.. ...

July 19, 2007 |
We had a lot of great swims today with some very
exceptional highlights. Colin got his first Senior Nat time

more PB's in the 1500 Free from this morning.
In Finals, Natasha Fung grabbed silver in 200IM while adding a new
National standard, Deanna Matthews captured our first Gold in 50
back, while Shannon Johnston held her own in the 50 back final. Doug Rawlick
closed with a
Bronze in 1500 Free. Deanna's Gold was our first Age Group

Volunteers Needed For
Provincials |
June 21, 2007 |
The Olympian Swim Club now has 70
swimmers qualified for the combined Age Group & Senior Provincial
Championships being held in Edmonton from Thursday, July 5th to
Sunday, July 8th. As the biggest team from Edmonton, our team is
really establishing itself as the major swim program in Edmonton and
one of the real elite programs in Alberta.
Part of what makes our club so successful is the unbelievable
volunteer support that we have shown in the past for local
competitions and championships. This upcoming Provincials is another
opportunity to show that support by volunteering to time or
officiate at any session for which you are available. We expect
every family with a swimmer in the meet to volunteer for at least
one shift, and more if possible. Your help is greatly appreciated.
To volunteer for a specific session, please contact Cheryl Wall at <jschramm@telusplanet.net>.
As a side note, it is thanks to both our tremendous athletes and
volunteers that Olympians are being considered to host next spring's
Alberta Age Group Provincials. Thank you for all of your help, both
past and future. |

Three More New A Qualifiers on Day Two at Age Group Trials |
June 17, 2007 |
Day two was filled with more excitement here in
Lethbridge. The morning session was great with Haley Jaques stepping
up and dropping 6 seconds to make her first ever A time in the 100
butterfly at 1:39. The finals were even more exciting with tons of
great performances. The night started off with the 200 breast. Aiden
Friesen won the 10 and under boys event with an improvement from the
morning at 4:02, and thanks to the win he is off to A provincials!
Duncan Lotoski swam in the 11-12 boys event and came 2nd with
another 3 second drop from his best time set in the morning at 3:32.
Next up was the 50 back. Tanner Fisher swam this event and improved
on his morning swim for a nice bronze medal. The 200 free was
exciting as Duncan Lotoski won a tight battle for Gold with a new
best time of 2:36. The 100 fly was again a great event tonight as it
was this morning. Georgia Kidd stepped up with a silver medal
performance and a new A time of 1:41, and Haley Jaques, just off
from her morning swim, ended up 4th. 200 back came next and Madisen
Rayburn really stepped up and dropped 4 more seconds (10 on the day)
for a bronze medal and a 3:01. Aiden Friesen saved his best swim of
the night for last as he dropped 5 seconds in the 200 back and won a
silver medal. Duncan Lotoski won his 2nd event of the day and 3rd
medal in total in the 11-12 boys event in an amazing race of 3:00.
This race was so close that the top 3 swimmers were all within 8
tenths of a second! The last event of the night was the 50 free and
Georgia Kidd came though again with a great swim for 3rd in the 10
and under event, and another solid time of 36.9. Tanner Fisher ended
the night well with a best time in 50 free and first time under 30
seconds for the bronze medal at 29.4.
The total for the weekend is now 4 new A qualifiers, with a few more
hopefuls tomorrow! Check back for more stories… |

One New A Qualifier on Day One at Age Group Trials
|
June 17, 2007 |
|
Today was the first day of Age Group
Trials here in Lethbridge, and the racing was fast and furious! The
only events today were the 4x50 freestyle and medley relays, and the
1500 free. The highlight of the night was Shyla Golly destroying her
best time in the 1500 free and making the A time by 46 seconds in a
time of 23:02! The relays were very fast with many of the swimmer
posting best ever split. Of note were Tanner Fisher going 28.9 for a
50 free, Georgia Kidd dropping a 41.8 50 fly, Haley Jaques leading
off with a 45 second 50 back, Georgia Fetzko going 37 for her 50
back lead off, and Duncan Lotoski bringing his 50 free home in 31.2.
More great racing is in store for the rest of the weekend, so keep
checking the web for more stories. |

10 & Under Series - Thank you to all Volunteers! |
June 6, 2007 |
The final swim meet for this year of the 10 & Under
Series was held on June 3, 2007. It was terrific to see the swimmers
have fun and develop during the series. Compared to the last few
years, we had an increase in the number of swimmers to over 150
swimmers per meet.
It took tremendous effort of many different people to make the four
swim meets work. In particular, the flexibility shown by volunteers
at the last meet was outstanding.
THANK YOU to all swimmers, coaches, parents, officials and
spectators for making this year’s 10 & Under Series a success. We
gratefully appreciate the time and effort of everyone who
participated. See you next year! |

More Great OSC Swimming at Kamloops Classic Meet |
June 6, 2007 |
While one High Performance / Performance squad was
heating up the pool at the Mel Zajac Meet in Vancouver, another
squad of Performance / TAG swimmers was terrorizing the rest of BC
at the Kamloops Classic Meet. With only 21 swimmers attending the
meet, we made up for our lack in size with a lot of dominating
performances in the pool. Swimmers took advantage of their
opportunity to race hard at an in-season meet and we saw both new
qualifying standards being met and old club records falling.
Highlighting the new qualifier list was Berkley Nowlan, who crushed
the 200 Fly Age Group National standard in Finals on Sunday night.
The swim came at the end of a long weekend of racing for Berkley,
and after spending all day at the pool. Following closely behind
Berkley in the 200 Fly was Katelyn Macleod, who dropped her time
under 2:50 for the first time and just missed qualifying for Age
Group Nationals as well. Tessa Wilson was pounding on the doorstep
of several Age Group National standards over the weekend, most
notably the 100 Fly and 200 IM, which she missed by less than 1
second each. A few more weeks of good training and these girls will
surely make their first-ever Age Group National standards.
Some new club records were also set, and highlighting the list was
Greg Swain who broke the 2-month-old Senior Men's Club Record in 50
Back set by Josh Au at Pan Pac Trials in April - a great in-season
performance. Also setting club records were Shannon Johnston in the
11-12 Girls 50 Back, and Mackenzie Lubberding in the 11-12 Boys 50
Fly. Shannon broke a 12-year-old record previously held by Kelly
O'Toole, and Mackenzie broke a 9-year-old record previously held by
Malcolm Lavoie.
The meet was a great success, and everyone who attended gained
exactly the kind of racing experience we wanted to have at this
meet. Hopefully, everyone came away from this meet with a few new
ideas of how they can make themselves even faster by the time we get
to our championship meets. Let's turn our focus back to the training
pool now, and make those changes happen in these last few weeks of
training left in our season. Good luck, swimmers! |

Mel Zajac International – Vancouver, BC |
June 2, 2007 |
The beautiful weather on the UBC campus makes for a
bright sunny pool at the home of the UBC Thunderbirds. OSC has a
team of fifteen swimmers from the Performance and High Performance
groups. This meet is the 2nd in the Bell Grand Prix series and the
first Senior National competition of the Long Course season. The
best swimmers from all across Canada come to compete for prize money
and to get an early test of rankings before going into the
championship portion of the season in July. Several teams from USA
Swimming have come to grab some cash as well and they certainly have
some very high quality athletes posting some very fast times. You
can check all the results at
www.pacificdolphins.com/results
OSC has had their fare share of success thus far in the meet. Friday
night we had Natasha Fung in the top 16 in the 100m Breaststroke and
Deanna Matthews place 5th in Finals with a new club record in the
200m Backstroke (2:19.93). Lori-Layne Kremer broke her own records
in the 50m and 100m Butterfly (30.21 and 1:05.92 respectively). The
OSC men (Joshua Au, Colin Bull, Erik Olson, Justin Selner) broke the
15-17 boys 400 FREE RELAY (3:46.39). The girls (Shaneese Nowlan,
Dana Armstrong, Madison Mills, Natasha Fung) were not to be out done
by the boys and broke the Senior 800 FREE RELAY (8:51.59). Madison
Mills swam a top 16 performance in the 1500m Freestyle (18:10.22)
while going a thirty-four second lifetime best time. |

Three OSC Swimmers Selected for Western Canada Games |
March 30, 2007 |
Based on performances swum at Pan American Games Trials and Western
Canadian Championships, Alberta has selected its team for this years Western
Canada Summer Games to be held in Sherwood Park during the first week of August.
Deanna Matthews was selected from her Provincial Record swim in the
200m Backstroke at Pan Am Trials. Joshua Au was fastest in both
Butterfly events for his age group at Trials and will go for 200m
Butterfly. Justin Selner was selected based on his 16:53.47 1500m
Freestyle at Western Canadian Champs as the top distance swimmer
born 1990 or later.

New Provincial Record for Deanna Matthews in 200 Back |
March 30, 2007 |
In
dramatic style Deanna Matthews crushed the Alberta Record for the
13-14 Girls 200m Backstroke, taking the time down by over 2 full
seconds. The old record held by Lynette Bayliss (2000) was 2:22.44 –
Deanna went 2:20.32 in prelims at Pan Am Trials. Her time was fast
enough to place her 9th from morning swims. With just moments before
her race was to swim in "B" final, the 8th placed swimmer scratched
and Deanna was moved up into the ‘A’ final, for her first ever
National A Final swim, a mad dash across the deck, which also meant
all race prep was for naught.
If you'd like to watch Deanna's swim,
Deanna's splits went as follows:
| 33.45 |
1:08.79 |
1:44.42 |
2:20.32* |

Two Senior Club Records in One Swim for Josh Au |
March 30, 2007 |
Josh
Au broke two club records in one swim Sunday morning at the Pan Am
Trials in Victoria. His 100m Backstroke preliminary swim was fast
enough at the 50m mark to break the Senior Male club record (29.36)
and his final time (1:01.40) was well under the 100m mark.
Josh's splits went as follows:

Mid-Winter (renovations/upgrades).
Just as a heads up, please note that beginning in June, all Friday
PM practices will be moved to Peter Hemingway from 4-6pm. From June
18 to June 30, all Tuesday and Thursday practices will be moved to a
different pool still to be confirmed. In July, all practices

Another OSC Victory in Regina at the ROD's Invitational Meet |
May 9, 2007 |
|
With 42 swimmers from JAG to High Performance, the
Olympians repeated their team victory at the ROD’s Invitational. OSC
was doubled in size by two other teams, the host (RODS) and the
Goldfins who placed second.
Three OSC swimmers won age group high point awards: Paige Kremer
(10&Under), Natasha Fung (13-14) and Josh Au (15&Over). OSC
dominated in the ‘specialty’ events with 4 swimmers in the Men’s
800m Eliminator, 2 in the Women’s 800m Eliminator and 2 swimmers in
the Women’s Skins competition. Madison Mills won the last three
‘skins’ and took the over all prize in that event while competing
against some senior swimmers.
New Olympian Club records from the weekend…
Lori-Layne Kremer – 100m Butterfly (1:05.93)
Deanna Matthews – 50m Backstroke (31.68)
Deanna Matthews, Natasha Fung, Lori-Layne Kremer, Madison Mills –
13&14 and OPEN 4 x 50 Medley Relay (2:04.76)
The weekend had some challenges with very long sessions and some
very busy event selections, however our OSC swimmers were very well
prepared and were able to post some extremely fast swims for early
May. |

Swim-a-thon a Great Success! |
May 1, 2007 |
With over one hundred swimmers participating in the swim and over 60
in the fundraising effort, Olympian Swim Club's Swim-a-thon was a
great success. This season we raised the bar and fundraised over
$10,000.00 while more funds are still coming in.
A special thanks to Teri Nowlan (Uhryn) and Jeanine Au for
organizing the Swim-a-thon and coming up with some terrific prizes
for those swimmers who raised money. I would also like to thank all
the volunteers who brought either food for the wrap up party or
awards for the athletes.
There were many swimmers who achieved milestones in this year's in
the Swim-a-thon, either by swimming continuously for two hours or by
increasing their volume from last season. Next year we hope to
continue to build on this season's success and swim a little further
and raise a bit more funds. |

"Pride", New Movie to be Presented by OSC as a New Fundraiser |
April 16, 2007 |
The new Swim movie "Pride" is not coming to Edmonton for unknown
reasons... so the Olympian Swim Club thought we would bring it in
ourselves. OSC has been given the opportunity to host a fundraiser
at the Grandin Theatre in St. Albert, #101, 22 Sir Winston Churchill
Avenue, where we will show the new movie "Pride" to as many people
as we can sell tickets.
On Sunday, April 29 there will be two showings. The first showing is
at 1pm and the second at 5pm. We will be selling tickets for only
$6.00 per person to see this great new film.
This is a great opportunity to see a movie based on your sport and
to support your swim club. Get your friends out, your friends’
friends, even their friends! The goal is to sell out both shows so
we need 350 people to spend $6 on good swimming entertainment… heck,
you may even learn something about the sport!

Tickets can be purchased ahead of time from Brian or Teri Nowlan by
calling 459-2232.
The movie is rated PG. Here is a short preview:
It is the year 1973, and Jim Ellis, a college-educated
African-American, can't find a job. Driven by his love of
competitive swimming, Jim converts an abandoned recreational pool
hall in a Philadelphia slum with the help of Elston, a local
janitor. But when city officials mark the new Philadelphia
Department of Recreation for demolition, Jim fights back. |

Seven OSC Swimmers Represent a Best-Ever Team Alberta |
April 9, 2007 |
36 Alberta swimmers, 7 of them from OSC, gave up their Easter Long
weekend to represent Team Alberta at the BC/AB Dual Meet in Kamloops
last weekend. Team Alberta put together a best-ever performance at
the meet, finishing just 11 points behind BC, and the Olympian
athletes were the stars of the meet.
Of the 7 athletes: Shannon Johnston, Kristan Kushlyk, Mackenzie
Lubberding, Madison Mills, Natasha Fung, Lori-Layne Kremer, and
Deanna Matthews, 5 of them received Individual awards from the meet
/ training camp. Madison Mills and Deanna Matthews were named
'Swimmer of the Camp' for their respective age groups, Lori-Layne
Kremer and Mackenzie Lubberding received the Team Spirit award for
their gender, and Shannon Johnston was named 'Most Positive
Teammate" for her age group.
For the first time ever, 2 OSC coaches were also named to the team.
Michelle MacNeil and Chris Nelson represented the Olympian coaching
staff. OSC was the only club to have more than 1 coach named to the
Alberta Team.
This was such a great way to kick off the Long Course season, with
OSC swimmers getting themselves noticed and once again showing that
we are the best part of Alberta swimming. Stay proud of these
accomplishments, and let's set our focus on the next challenge of
getting back to training in our home program making ourselves even
better.
Congratulations, Olympians! |

The final event of the weekend was the 4 x 100m Medley Relay. Deanna
Matthews led out in a 1:07.02, eclipsing her previous 13 &

Matthews, Natasha Fung, Dana Armstrong, Lindsay Morton) was fast
enough to break the 15-17 Girls Club Record in the event but were

Good Start for OSC at the Canadian Pan Am Games Trials |
March 22, 2007 |
Here we are in rainy Victoria BC for the Pan American Games Trials.
OSC has 7 swimmers entered in the meet with 4 of the 7 being their
first ever LC National competition.
Erik Olson swam an 8-second best time for his first-ever race on
Wednesday night in the 800m Freestyle. That same evening, Lindsay
Morton swam her second-best ever 1500m Freestyle. Thursday morning
saw more OSC swimmers posting best times with Erik and Josh getting
it started in the 100 Free. Josh was also 9 / 100ths over his best
in 100 Fly. All the OSC girls were entered in the 400 IM and all
swam near or better than their best swims. Lindsay Morton was the
stand out with her first ever National second swim (11th in the 400
IM).
Tonight we will get Lindsay going along with our first women’s 4 x
200 Freestyle Relay at a National Competition in over 6 years! To
follow the action check the

New Provincial Record for Lori-Layne Kremer at Westerns! |
February 25, 2007 |
Lori-Layne
Kremer shocked her teammates, coaches, parents, and herself with an
outstanding swim in the 50 Fly on Day 2 of the Western Championships
in Regina last weekend. Her time of 28.66 not only won the B Final,
not only qualified her for her first ever Senior National standard,
but also broke the Alberta Provincial record for 13&14-year-old
girls. The former Provincial record of 28.98 was held by Alexandra
Pasemko of RIP.
If you'd like to watch Lori-Layne's swim,
For all the young swimmers out there, make sure you watch how well
Lori-Layne times her touch at the turn and finish of her race. It
took over a year of dedicated effort in practice to make that skill
this good, and it ended up being the difference in setting a new
Provincial record and qualifying her for Senior Nationals (not to
mention out-touching the girl beside her in lane 3).
Congratulations, Lori-Layne! |

The
Information Package for the Performance Spring Training Camp in

in the hands of the chaperone before we leave.
Also included in the package is our flight information, hotel
information, and an itinerary of camp activities. Please look at all
the information, and contact Coach Chris at

OSC Places 2nd Overall at Age Group Provincials |
March 18, 2007 |
Once again the number 1 team in Edmonton, the Olympian Swim Club
took down another one of the Provincial giants at these Age Group
Provincials when they handily beat the University of Calgary Swim
Club for 2nd place in Overall Team standings.
It was a slightly different looking team from a year ago, when OSC
placed 3rd behind the 2 big Calgary teams. This year OSC not only
won the girls' side of the meet, but scored nearly twice as many
points as any other girls team. This strength was demonstrated in no
better way than the fact that there was an Olympian relay team on
the podium for every female relay event, in every age group. It is
exciting to think that not only is OSC currently strong in its age
group program, but there are plenty of even younger swimmers who
can't wait to step in as some of the older ones begin racing at a
national and international level in the senior age categories.
Some of the swimmers from Age Group Provincials are already
beginning their senior national experience, as Deanna Matthews and
Natasha Fung are off to join the rest of the OSC national qualifiers
in Victoria next week for the Pan Am Games Trials. Of special note
are Madison Mills and Lori-Layne Kremer, who each came agonizingly
close to also qualifying for the Trials meet. It's just a matter of
time now before these girls and others become a part of the OSC
contingent of senior national qualifiers.
This marks the end of the Short Course season, and for most swimmers
that includes a short break from training. Take some time to relax
and get back ahead of your school work so that you'll be ready for
the Long Course season. For the two swimmers going on to Trials next
week, Deanna Matthews and Natasha Fung, good luck to you and all OSC
swimmers at the Trials! |

Age Group Championships -
REAL-TIME |
March 10, 2007 |
Two days through A provincials here in Calgary the swimming from OSC
has been amazing! We are currently sitting in second position in the
team scoring just behind Cascade with one day to go. With an amazing
team effort we might be able to give Cascade a run for their money.
Here are some highlights so far:
Mackenzie Lubberding made his first Age Group National qualifying
time in the 200 fly on Friday with a great swim for the silver
medal. New club records have been set by Lori-Layne Kremer in the
200 fly, The 13-14 Girls 400 free relay (Natasha, Deanna, Christine,
and Madison), Mackenzie Lubberding in the 50 fly, and Kristan
Kushlyk (50 breast split in the 100).
We're expecting more great swims on Sunday. Keep following the live
results here on the website. Follow live

OSC Non-Gaming Fundraiser |
March 7, 2007 |
Get your commitment points here! The Olympian Swim Club has been
asked to provide workers for the upcoming POLICE concert on
Saturday, June 2nd at Commonwealth Stadium. Our role would be
selling food and beverages in a Western Foods concession booth(s) at
the stadium. At this time we are canvassing the OSC membership to
determine how many individuals would be interested in working this
event. If you choose to do so, 20 points per worker will be credited
to your families’ commitment point requirement.
This is a great opportunity for families that still require
commitment points. If you have already satisfied your commitment
point requirement and would still like to take part in this event
you are more than welcome to do so. All interested OSC members are
asked to email Brian Nowlan at
bnowlan@shaw.ca as soon as possible. This will allow us to
determine if there is sufficient interest to proceed with this
venture. |

OSC Men & Women 2nd Overall at Alberta Senior Provincials |
March 6, 2007 |
The highlights just keep rolling in as 27 Olympian swimmers competed
over the weekend at the Alberta Senior Provincial Championships in
Medicine Hat. Without the presence of our 14&Under swimmers, who are
preparing for Age Group Provincials this coming weekend, OSC still
managed to move up significantly from its placing a year ago and
snatch the prize of 2nd Overall team, as well as top Edmonton team.

The 2nd-Overall placings of the men & women are
outstanding accomplishments and symbols of our increasing
strength in the senior age categories. OSC was once again a
major on-deck presence at the meet, and continue to catch the
attention of the other big Alberta clubs.
Congratulations, swimmers, on your team performance!

Age Group Championships Announcement #2 |
March 6, 2007 |
Alberta Diving provincials are being held concurrently with our
Alberta Age Group Swimming provincial championships this weekend at
the Talisman Centre in Calgary. The host club, University of Calgary
SC, and the Talisman Centre have asked for the patience and
cooperation of all attending parents and coaches due to the
limitations there will be on parking and spectator space.
For the preliminary sessions, the swim meet will be run out of both
the South pool of the main competition tank, and the East pool of
the new training tank. Viewing areas are extremely limited for the
training tank, so the best chance you have of getting to watch the
action is by volunteering to officiate on deck. Contact Candice
Williams at clwilliams@shaw.ca
to volunteer.
For parking, the Talisman Centre have suggested carpooling or using
the LRT whenever possible. There will also be overflow parking
available across the river at St Mary's. Here is a map of the
Talisman Centre and the additional parking:

Olympians Finish 5th Overall at Western Championships |
February 24, 2007 |
The Championship portion of the 2006-07 Short Course season started
off last weekend in Regina, where 28 OSC swimmers competed in the
Western Canadian Swimming Championships. This was to be an early
measuring stick to see where OSC stands with respect to other teams
in the country, as well as with respect to our own squad of swimmers
who last year finished 11th at this same competition.
The meet started very strong for OSC, ending the first day of
competition in 5th place overall. From there, OSC never looked back
as the team stayed within the top 6 in team rankings all weekend,
and finished in 5th place overall. This placing includes being the
3rd place Alberta team and top Edmonton team in the competition, as
we creep ever closer to being one of the top 2 clubs in the
province. OSC's performance solidifies its place as one of the
brightest up and coming programs in the country.
Also of note on the weekend was the overall placing of our Men's
Team, which finished 5th overall, and our Women's team, which
finished in 10th overall. The performance of our boys was a huge
step forward from last year's performances where the bulk of the
team scoring was done by our girls team. With a swiftly improving
group of young boys joining forces with a girls team that was 2nd in
the country last summer at Age Group Nationals, it looks like there
is a lot to look forward to through the rest of this season and
onward.
Congratulations, swimmers - Now let's go show our stuff at Senior
and Age Group Provincials!! |

New Club Record for Mackenzie Lubberding |
January 26, 2007 |
At
the Mayflower Invitational in Sherwood Park, Mackenzie Lubberding
broke the 11 & 12 Boys 50 meter Butterfly record, not once, but
twice during the weekend.
His preliminary time of 32.15 broke the record of 32.32 set by Luke
Peddie last season. In a fantastic race during the finals session,
he smashed his morning time to finish in 31.69.
This is Mackenzie’s first club record in the 11 & 12 age group, and
is an amazing feat as he is still only 11 years of age!
Congratulations Mackenzie! |

Josh Au Represents OSC & Canada Proudly at the Olympic Youth
Festival |
January 23, 2007 |
Over
the last 5 days, Josh Au represented the Olympian Swim Club at the
Australian Olympic Youth Festival in Sydney, Australia. The
competition hosted the best 16-year-old or younger swimmers in the
world, with 21 different countries being represented. This was
Josh's first opportunity to represent Canada and his home club at an
International competition.
Josh fought through the nerves of being on the world stage for the
first time admirably well. He swam many of his best events close to
best times until the 3rd day of the competition, where he qualified
for a Final in the 100m Butterfly and finished in 8th place with a
time of 57.77, a personal best.
Congratulations, Josh, on a great meet! |

It's a wrap at
Westerns! |
February 18, 2007 |
|
The final night of swimming here at Westerns was
exciting as the team entered the night in 6th place with hopes of
moving up as high as fourth. It would take a monumental effort to
make it happen, but the swimmers were up for the challenge.
The first swim of the night was Natasha in the 100 breast B final.
She swam a fast race, and improved on her morning time to come in
11th at 1:14.9. In the men's event Nathan Kindrachuk and Kelly Tso
were both in the B final, with Nate coming out 12th at 1:07.6, and
Kelly in for 16th at 1:08.8.
The 400 IM was as usual a strong one for OSC. Lindsay Morton placed
6th in the A final at a very solid 5:00.3. In the B final Natasha
won it in a very speedy 5:03.6, with Shaneese in for 11th at 5:08.3.
In the C final Lori-Layne Kremer went a lifetime best of 5:12.2 for
22nd place overall. In the men's event Callum Lavoie was in the
final and placed 8th in the same time as the morning, 4:43. Nathan K
was in the B final and fought hard for 14th position. The C final
was populated by OSC swimmers, with Trevor Godley, Bryce Fisher, and
Cody Sladen placing 21st, 22nd, and 23rd overall.
We had two 50 backstrokers on the night. Deanna Matthews was in the
women's B final and after fighting sickness all weekend put in
another solid performance for 14th. Greg Swain was in the men's C
final and was right on his best for 24th place.
100 fly was the last individual event of the night for OSC, and Josh
Au finished the night with a bang with his second medal of the meet,
coming in for bronze at 56.5. To put this in perspective, Josh was
third behind two former national team members who were aged 25 and
24. Not bad for a 17 year old!
The final event of the night was the 4x100 medley relay and we
finished with a bang with 4 new club records. In the women's event
our team of Shaneese, Carly, Lindsay and Sheena broke the 15-17
record, while our 13-14 team (Deanna, Natasha, Lori-Layne, and
Madison) broke their record. The men's team of Cody, Nathan K, Josh,
and Mike Vandenham brought the senior club record below 4:00 for the
first time at 3:59.41, while our B team (Greg, Kelly, Callum, and
Colin) broke the 15-17 year old record at 4:05.79.
The great swimming on the night brought us up from 6th to 5th in the
overall standings, a 6 place improvement from last season. A total
of 12 club records were broken, and 1 provincial record. Great
swimming OSC!! |

Silver for Josh Au at
Westerns! |
February 17, 2007 |
|
Saturday night at Westerns was another great one for
OSC. Racing in the morning was tough, but OSC came in with 18 swims
for the night.
The night started off with one of our strongest events, the 200 fly.
In the men's event Josh Au won our first medal of the competition
getting the silver in a solid time of 2:05. Callum Lavoie
represented us well in the B final going a best time of 2:12 for
12th, and Cody Sladen came in 23rd in the C final. In the women's A
final Lindsay swam a gutsy front end of her race and moved up 2
spots from the morning for 5th place. In the B final Dana Armstrong
won it with a much improved swim at 2:21, and Lori-Layne Kremer swam
to 13th.
The 200 breast was the second event of the night and again we had
lots of swims. Natasha Fung swam in the A final and went a sweet
best time of 2:37.7 for 7th place. Carly Perreaux was in the C final
and and came 23rd at 2:44. In the men's event Nathan Kindrachuk swam
a great race for his second best time of the day at 2:24, but ended
up being disqualified. In the C final we had 2 competitors, with
Callum Lavoie cracking 2:30 for the first time (2:29.9) for 18th,
and Kelly Tso swam 2 seconds faster than in the morning for 2:31 and
20th.
The third event was 100 free and our only swimmer was Josh Au. He
swam another great race in the C final and went a best time of 53.7
for 23rd.
The 200 back featured Shaneese Nowlan in the C final. She swam a
tough race and came out in 19th overall with a solid 2:24. Josh and
Cody swam in the C final of the men's event. Josh swam a 2 second
best time of 2:10 for 19th, and Cody dropped a few hundredths to
another best of 2:12 at 22nd.
The last race was the 50 breast. Natasha Fung swam in the women's B
final and came 11th with another best of 34.6. Kelly Tso swam
another race and came 10th in the men's event at 30.57, and Mike
Vandenham came 18th in the C final at 31.02.
Tomorrow is the final day of the meet with OSC battling for a spot
in the top 5 in the team scoring. Check back for the final day's
results. |
