Alberta Summer Games - Triathlon Report

August 15, 2008

3 OSC swimmers crossed over to a whole different sport at Alberta Summer Games, and all 3 of them came away with medals. Adeline Maunder won Silver in the 11-12 Girls Triathlon, Kelly Delorme won Silver in the 13-14 Girls Triathlon, and Elodie Maunder won Bronze in the 13-14 Girls Triathlon.

It shows a lot of courage and shows off the athleticism of these 3 swimmers to be able to cross over into another sport and still be one of the best in the province. Way to go girls!

Alberta Summer Games - Meet Report

August 13, 2008

6 OSC swimmers representing two different Zones competed this past weekend at the Alberta Summer Games in Medicine Hat. Andrew McDowell and Monica McDowell were members of the Zone 5 team which was comprised of cities surrounding Edmonton, and Shannon Johnston, Kristan Kushlyk, Shyla Golly, and Rachel Maradyn represented Zone 6 (Edmonton). The meet was held short course which is always a fun way to end off the season. This meet was also exciting because finals were held in the morning, so the swimmers got to experience what our Olympians in Beijing are facing over there.

The meet ended up being great for OSC with a number of medals and personal best times posted. On Saturday morning Monica took gold in the 400 im, while Shyla followed for the bronze in the 11-12 category. Kristan followed up with a gold in the 13-14 category. Next up was 100 free where Shannon took bronze for 13-14’s. In the very next event Shannon got another bronze, this time in 200 back. Then we had the 100 breast where Shyla took the bronze and Kristan took the gold. 200 IM followed that, where Monica took silver and Rachel took bronze for 11-12’s, and Kristan took the silver. The final individual event was the 400 free where Monica got the silver and Kristan got her third gold of the session winning handily in a great time of 4:40. Monica finished up her session helping Zone 5 to a silver in the 200 medley relay.

Sunday morning the swimmers were back at it with some more early finals. In 200 breast Shyla took her third bronze medal of the meet while Kristan got her fourth gold in her only race of the day. In the 100 fly Monica took silver and Shannon got bronze. Monica rounded out the OSC medal haul with leading off her 200 free relay to another silver medal performance.

Overall the swimmers did an amazing job of stepping up with lots of racing in a short period of time and really did us proud! Congrats to everyone on a great season and we’ll see you in the fall!

Deanna Matthews sets a new Provincial Record

August 10, 2008

Deanna Matthews finished the season with one last attack on the Provincial record books. On Friday night at the North American Challenge Cup in Edmonton, Deanna broke her own 15-17-year-old 200 Backstroke Provincial record set back in November 2007. Her new time of 2:16.22 breaks her old record of 2:16.93. Deanna is still only 16 years old, and has nearly 2 full seasons to continue improving on her own records.

Her splits were as follows:

32.40 1:06.69 1:41.88 2:16.22
(32.40) (34.29) (35.19) (34.34)

Congratulations, Deanna, on your great swimming!

Paige Kremer sets 2 new Provincial Records

August 10, 2008

Paige Kremer finished off the 2007-08 season with an amazing meet as part of Team Canada at the North American Challenge Cup in Edmonton, from August 7-9th, 2008. This was Paige's first National team, and she used the opportunity to swim huge lifetime best times in both of her backstroke events to set new 11&12-year-old Provincial records in each.

Paige's 100 Backstroke time of 1:08.61 in the finals on Thursday night broke the 8-year-old Provincial record of 1:09.08, previously held by Mallory Hoekstra of EKSC. Her splits were as follows:

33.79 1:08.61*
(33.79) (34.82)

Paige's 200 Backstroke time of 2:27.14 in the finals on Friday night broke another 8-year-old Provincial record. This time it was Mallory Hoekstra's record time of 2:28.11 that was surpassed by Paige. Her splits were as follows:

34.63 1:10.98 1:49.47 2:27.14
(34.63) (36.35) (38.49) (37.67)

Paige has a lot of racing left in the 11&12 age group, as she is still 11 years old until fall.  Way to go, Paige! Keep racing and having fun!

Far Westerns - Meet Report

August 8, 2008

OSC has travelled to Far Westerns 3 times over the last 3 seasons, and we have always been able to count on 3 things: very hot conditions, fast swimming and a fun time. This meet was so much fun, and every swimmer was successful in challenging there own goals and learning a lot about how to swim fast late in a season. Every swimmer achieved at least 1 personal best time.

Kelly Delorme swam amazing, placing top-8 in the toughest age group at the meet (13-14 girls) with a 16-second best time in the 1500 Free of 18:36.6, and also a 6-second best time in the 400 Free of 4:45.5. Shannon Johnston, also in the toughest age group at the meet, swam best-ever morning swims including a best time in 200 Fly of 2:39.5. Nathan Kindrachuk dropped 8 seconds in his 400 IM to place 3rd with a time of 4:49.0. Callum Lavoie had much-deserved best times by over 3 seconds each in his 2 best events, going 4:42.7 in 400 IM and 2:30.9 in 200 Breast. Bobbie Mielnichuk also had a big best time in one of her best events, dropping over 1 second in her 200 Free to go 2:03.6, which was just a small part of her gold medal sweep in the 100-200-400 Free events. Braeden Newton was nearly 100% best times throughout the meet, including a 2:06.4 in 200 Back (1 sec best), 4:46.5 in 400 IM (4 sec best), 2:12.8 in 200 IM (4 sec best), and 4:18.8 in 400 Free (5 sec best). Erik Olson led all of our Free relays in near best times, and had a best time in 100 Breast by over 1 second, going 1:17.1. Justin Selner finished the season with a couple of huge best times, dropping 11 seconds in 400 IM to go 5:05.4 and dropping 4 seconds in 200 Fly (from a 2-second best time only 6 days earlier at Age Group Nationals) to go 2:12.7. And finally, Nicholas Tworek had a best time in his best event with a 17:40.3 in the 1500 Free, and added a 3-second best time in the 400 Free to go 4:29.3.

The OSC team had a great time in San Jose / San Francisco, including 2 quick trips down to Fisherman's Wharf and the Golden Gate Bridge. You can check out some of the fun by looking at the 2008 Far Westerns LC picture gallery.

British Youth Nationals (Team Alberta) - Meet Report

August 8, 2008

Hey OSC!

So if you didn't already know, we travelled to Sheffield, England for the ASA British Youth National Championships. It's a little bit like our Age Group Nationals. We left on the Sunday of Age Group Nationals in Calgary and returned the following Monday. On the swimming side of things, we started the meet off the morning after we arrived with our two best events (400IM and 200Back/200Fly). We were both very pleased with our performances, both of us making finals (Deanna placing third in 200Back). The next day we had our off event (400FR). On the third day Deanna had 200FR and Lori had 100FLY. The neat thing about this meet was that there were also semi finals for the stroke 100's, sprint FR's, and the 200IM. Lori swam a solid race in the morning which got her into the semi final that night. In the semi final she dropped her time by a little bit, preparing her for the final the following night. The next day Lori had a strong 200IM and Deanna swam 200IM and 100back qualifying in both for the semi finals that night. For the finals, Lori started off the night placing third and tying her best ever time for 100FLY. Later that evening, Deanna swam both semi finals, even though they were less than 20minutes apart. Focusing on 200IM, Deanna swam a life time best, winning the semi final. Unfortunately, the 100back suffered, being right after the 200IM and she didn't make the final. On the last night of the meet, Deanna swam another life time best in 200IM, finishing third.

Now for the time outside of the pool. Since we had our best events on Tuesday, we didn't get out much that day. But on Wednesday, neither of us had finals so we went out shopping around Sheffield. Our hotel was right by the pool and we walked everywhere so we had quite a bit of freedom. For lunches and during the day we were usually oyo. We ended up going to a lot of different bakeries and shops to eat. For dinner we changed it up by eating at different places each night. We found it funny because we were in Europe but we ate Chinese, Indian, Thai, Italian, Oriental, and some other different foods. On Saturday we took the train to one of the biggest malls in Europe. Deanna had to leave early to prepare for her 200IM final, but everyone else stayed and shopped for most of the day. While running (in sandals) to catch the train back to our hotel, Lori tripped, and at first didn't notice anything, but later found a big pool of blood around her feet dripping all over the train platform. But it was okay in the end when our chaperone cut and patched up everything. On our last day in Sheffield we took a double-decker bus out to the countryside to see an old castle and take a tour through some old caverns and mines. Overall it was an amazing opportunity for both of us, competing in an international competition and representing Team Alberta in Sheffield.

Deanna:

Age Group Nationals - Meet Report

August 8, 2008

The 2008 Canadian Age Group Nationals in Calgary were the most successful championships to date for the Olympian Swim Club. 2 years ago, OSC cracked into the top-15 overall teams in the country for the first time at this meet, by placing 5th overall (in part due to poor attendance from eastern Canadian teams). 1 year ago, OSC competed in the largest championships ever held in Canada and held onto a very strong 8th overall placing. This year, at the 2008 Age Group Nationals, OSC was once again a notable force throughout the weekend, and finished with a best-ever 4th overall placing, with the Girls in 3rd and the Boys in 5th overall.

In total the team won 22 medals in the pool, up from 13 last year. Gold medal winners were Lori Layne Kremer (200 fly), Josh Au (200 fly), Deanna Matthews (200 back), Braeden Newton (200 back), Bobbie Mielnichuk (100 free), and the 15-18 Girls 4x100 Free Relay (Shaneese Nowlan, Natasha Fung, Bobbie, and Madison Mills). Silvers went to Paige Kremer (100 back, 200 back), Braeden (100 back), the 11-12 Girls 4x50 free and 4x50 medley relays (Paige, Arynn deLeeuw, Hannah Lantz, and Berkley Nowlan), and the 16-18 Boys 4x100 Medley Relay (Braeden, Nathan Kindrachuk, Josh, and Erik Olson). Bronze medals went to Luke Peddie (50 free), Bobbie (50 free, 800 free), Natasha (200 im), Shaneese (200 im), Paige (1500 free), Madison (200 back), Lori Layne (100 fly), Bruno Sharpe (800 free), and the 15-18 girls 4x100 medley relay (Shaneese, Natasha, Lori Layne, and Bobbie).

On Monday we also had the Open water 5 km competition. The team added 3 more medals from our 4 swimmer contingent. Nick Tworek won the gold in the 16 year old boys competition, Bruno got bronze in the 15 year old boys, Madison got bronze in the 15 year old girls, and Kristan was 7th in the 14 year old girls.

Two Provincial Records were also broken by our girls. Both the 4x100 free relay (3:55.88) and 4x100 medley relay (4:26.53) were new Alberta Records for 15-17 year old girls. Great job Shaneese, Natasha, Bobbie, Madison, and Lori Layne!

There were so many incredible performances throughout the weekend. One of the most memorable was a new Senior National standard by Kristan Kushlyk in the 50 Breaststroke. Kristan needed to go over a second faster than her previous best morning swim just to make the final, and then she dropped over a full second off of her previous best time of 35.51 in finals to go 34.45 seconds and beat the national standard by 3/10ths. With that swim, Kristan became the first swimmer ever in OSC to qualify for Senior Nationals while training in the Performance group. That sure says a lot about the depth of our program, and the potential our club has to continue being the best competitive swim program in Edmonton and one of the very best in all of Canada for years to come.

17 club records were also broken throughout the course of the weekend. Paige got two of them, breaking the 11-12 100 back twice (1:11.00, 1:10.83). Kristan got both the 13-14 and Open records with her 50 breast (34.45), Bobbie got the Open 50 free (26.71) and 100 free (57.02), Mackenzie got the 50 breast (37.50), Braeden broke his 100 back (1:00.18), and Josh broke the 50 fly twice (26.65, 26.09). On the relay side it was the 11-12 girls breaking both records (200 FR – 2:02.20, 200 MR – 2:16.31), the 15-17 girls broke both the 15-17 and Open records in 400 FR (3:55.88) and 400 MR (4:26.53), and the Open Boys 400 MR broke the record with 3:57.25.

The most fun part of the whole weekend was seeing the really really great team spirit during all the sessions. The OSC swimmers were cheering for every race, and the performances got better and better because of it. Great job to everyone on an amazing weekend. To those with meets still to go, Good Luck, and to those who are done, enjoy your summer!

Congratulations, Olympians!

Alberta Age Group / Senior Provincials - Meet Report

A total of 59 OSC swimmers were in attendance, and we had representatives from every group from High Performance to JOW. Mackenzie Lubberding sets New Provincial Record!

June 25, 2008

Mackenzie Lubberding set a new Provincial Age Group Record in the 11-12 year-old Boys 50m Butterfly on Saturday evening at the OSC Blue and White meet.

Mackenzie's time of 29.69 eclipses the previous provincial record set in 2001 by Joel Greenshields of 29.82. Greenshields is currently an Olympic team member who will be competing in Beijing this summer.

This is Mackenzie's first provincial record.

Congratulations, Mackenzie!

Age Group Trials - Meet Report

June 20, 2008

The Aquatic Center in Medicine Hat once again proved that it is one fast pool last weekend. The racing at Age Group Trials was fast and furious and the Olympians did not disappoint. OSC swimmers made no secret out of the fact that they were there to race and win.

The meet started off with a bang with our Girls 13/14 Relay made up of Georgia Fetzko, Sarah Fleming, Kathryn Legaspi and Tori Frank winning both the Freestyle and the Medley relays by a comfortable margin. As our only solo swimmer Friday night Andrew McDowell also swam a great mile taking just under a minute off his previous best time. Saturday was no different as we had plenty of personal best times and great swims to make finals right in the morning. Saturday night featured some amazing swims and best times as well. Kathryn Legaspi, Georgia Fetzko, Duncan Lotoski, Sarah Fleming and Julia Marchand all medaled with best time swims. Also Kathryn, Georgia and Duncan qualified for Age Group Champs with their efforts on Saturday night. Sunday morning looked a little tough for the OSC squad and some tiredness was creeping in but none of that mattered by finals as everyone again took the pool by storm. Duncan Lotoski, Georgia Fetzko, Kathryn Legaspi, Hayley Basterash and Nikola Srnic all found their way to the podium Sunday night and Hayley became the next qualifier for Age Group Champs with an excellent swim in the 100 Breast. We only had a small team of swimmers at Age Group Trials but they came with a huge presence. Great racing and congratulations to our four new Age Group Champs qualifiers.

Natasha Fung sets New Canadian Record in 200 IM

March 17, 2008

Natasha Fung set a new National Age Group Record in the 13-14-year-old Girls 200m IM on Sunday evening at the Alberta Age Group Provincials in Edmonton.

Natasha's swim broke the previous national record set in 1987 by Allison Higson of 2:16.79. Higson was an Olympic Bronze Medalist in 1988, as well as a world record-holder in the 200 Breaststroke. Natasha's swim also broke her own Provincial Record set in December 2007.

Natasha's splits were as follows:
30.04 1:04.21 1:44.19 2:16.36*
(30.04) (34.17) (39.98) (32.17)

Congratulations, Natasha!

Summer Nationals - Day 1 Recap

July 17, 2008

This summer’s Nationals in Winnipeg has an interesting twist on the event order. Like the Olympics this summer Nationals is swimming evening preliminary heats and morning Finals. It is a great exercise to teach our national kids to get up for those morning swims as they are finals now.

OSC has 12 swimmers in the meet (list below) and after day one we had a record high 4 swims in finals in one session. Josh Au finished 8th in the 200m butterfly, Lori Layne Kremer was 3rd in the B final with a best time of 2:16.94 and a time that was 7th over all. Deanna Matthews was 16th in the 100m backstroke and Bobbie Mielnichuk finished 3rd in the B final with a best time of 2:04.36. Dana Armstrong who swam her 1500 Free in the 2nd fastest heat posted a 10 second best time of 17:26.41 and was good enough for 8th place over all.

Blue vs. White - Meet Report

June 30, 2008

Another Blue versus White meet is in the books and this year it was Blue with a marginal victory. It was great to see how fast our kids swam at this year’s meet. There were so many best time performances and the environment was competitive yet friendly. Thank you to all the parents for their support throughout the season in hosting over 10 competitions. We have truly become the club in Edmonton for hosting meets and it is a credit to the volunteerism from our membership.

If you are wrapping the season up this weekend please enjoy your summer and we hope to see you back in Blue and White next year. If you have a few more competitions to go, train fast to race fast! Good luck to all and have a great summer!

Congratulations to our new Board of Directors!

June 26, 2008

A new board of directors was elected on Tuesday evening at our AGM. Congratulations to Susan Kamminga, our new President, and congratulations to all Board members for volunteering their time to be valued leaders of the Olympian Swim Club.

Alberta Summer Games Zone 6 Trials - Meet Report

June 26, 2008

Mission Accomplished!

Four OSC swimmers took part in the Alberta Summer Games Trials for Zone 6 on Sunday, June 22, and all 4 made the team! Shyla Golly and Rachel Maradyn made the 11-12 team, while Shannon Johnston and Kristan Kushlyk made the 13-14 team. All 4 girls raced tough especially considering they did 5 or 6 races in less than 3 hours, and they even produced some best times! Great job ladies, and good luck to our competitors in the Zone 5 Trials this coming weekend!

New Section on the OSC Website

June 25, 2008

A new section has been added to the OSC website. There is a new menu title called 'Education', under which you will be able to access important or interesting information relevant to the sport of swimming.

A new page titled 'Articles for Swimming' has been added under the 'Education' menu. This page will continue to grow as we post more articles over time. There are already several articles posted, offering great advice and outlooks on the sport of swimming for both a swimmer and parent point of view.

Group Movement

June 24, 2008

Each year a letter goes out to all the families with information for next season’s registration. Each year we try to get these letters done as soon as the season wraps up. There are many details that have to be taken care of prior to confirming registrations or group movements. One of our biggest challenges is getting all the pool time confirmed with the various rentals.

This season we will be sending the letters out to the families in early July. I hope this doesn’t inconvenience anyone too much however it is the best timeline we can hope for in confirming all necessary details.

We have had a great season of swimming and I look forward to welcoming back each and every member to our program. Once the letters go out to our families please feel free to contact our coaches if you have further questions.

Help Needed for Age Group / Senior Provincials

June 17, 2008

The Edmonton Keyano Swim Club is hosting the 2008 Alberta Age-Group Senior Championships on July 3-6 and they are looking for volunteer officials. This is the season-ending meet and they are expecting a large number of swimmers. They are seeking our help in supplying as many volunteers as we can muster. They have been very supportive of OSC meets of late and I would like to see this tradition continue into next season.

If you can help out, please go this link and you can sign up electronically. Feel free to sign up for as many shifts as you can as they will be double-ending some events which require twice as many timers.

Kelly Delorme, Katelyn MacLeod, and Matt Ricioppo.

Swimmers with 7 for 8 best times were:
Kristan Kushlyk, Elodie Maunder, Hannah Lantz, Katrina Sharpe, and Stephanie Thomlinson.

That's almost half of the 23 swimmers who attended the meet with 7 or more best times! In fact, every swimmer had at least 2 best times and were close in many more. That is awesome as we turn our focus to the championship meets coming up in July.

The meet was also a great lesson for many of our swimmers on the importance of teamwork and being positive. As the team grew more tired, we managed to save our best session of the meet for last, with almost 100% best times, and not by coincidence almost all of our focus was directed at supporting each other and swimming fast.

Red Deer Freeze or Fry - Meet Recap

June 13, 2008

This year’s Freeze or Fry was definitely a Freeze! With cloudy and windy conditions leading into rain and thunder on Saturday night, the weather wasn’t as beautiful as last year. That didn’t stop the OSC swimmers from doing a great job though!

The biggest challenge of the weekend was staying warm and dry. The swimmers learned throughout the weekend how to keep themselves warm (the buddy system worked well!) and to just focus on the task at hand – swimming FAST. Overall we had a ton of best times, great swims, and great races, and the O’s showed how tough they really are.

Even despite the weather the swimmers kept a great attitude and had fun during the weekend. An attitude like that will go a long way to making these swimmers champions of the future!

3rd Annual OSC Blue vs. White

June 9, 2008

Mark your calendars because the dual is on June 21st at Fountain Park Pool. OSC divides its team into two and races for the pride of the season. The meet warm ups start at 4pm, racing at 5pm with a BBQ and ice cream as a wrap up. Each year the meet has been a close decision so come out and help your team to victory.

Check back to the website for a complete list of teams early next week.

Reagan Williams Fundraiser

June 9, 2008

Please come out and attend the Pub Night and Silent Auction in remembrance of Regan Williams, June 19th at the Hudson’s Tap House. Regan was an Olympian Swim Club member who went on to swim with the UofA and later became of the Edmonton’s biggest contributors to swimming through his volunteerism. All monies raised at the Silent Auction will be put towards an endowment for the UofA swim team.

Silver Cup - Meet Report

June 9, 2008

The Silver Cup on May 31 and June 1 was a great competition for OSC with a variety of swimmers from Performance to OW swimming together. Big highlights from the meet were new A times for Annika Kamminga (200 breast) and Grace Tworek (200 fly) and a new Meet Qualifying time for Adeline Maunder (200 im). Another highlight was Luke Peddie breaking the club record in the 13-14 boys 50 fly and narrowly missing the Westerns qualifying standard in the process.

There were lots of best times achieved from the swimmers, and those with best times in every event they raced were Nicole Baker, John Colquhoun, Sarah Fleming, Caitlin Kamminga, Paige Kremer, Kathryn Legaspi, Duncan Lotoski, Katelyn MacLeod, Elodie Maunder, Alyssa McNamara, Madisen Rayburn, Katrina Sharpe, Stephanie Thomlinson, and Alice Zhang. Congratulations to all the swimmers on a great competition and on representing our team so well!

10 & Under Series #4 - Meet Recap

June 5, 2008

The 2007-2008 10 and Under Series wrapped up on Sunday at Fountain Park pool with lots of awesome racing from our 10 and unders. Best times were falling all over the place, and there were so many that it was hard to keep up! Seeing how much these swimmers have improved since September was so much fun to watch, and the coaches look forward to seeing these young swimmers get better and better over the years.

Special congratulations go out to Paxton Gerritsen who won the award for achieving a best time in every swim at every meet! It is a great challenge for a swimmer to get better every time they swim and Paxton did an amazing job at this!

Thanks to all the volunteers who helped out all season with organizing the meets, bringing food and refreshments, and officiating. We again showed that OSC runs some of the best meets around and with the great volunteers that we have this will surely continue in the coming years.

Lori Layne Kremer added to Team Canada

June 2, 2008

A 5th OSC swimmer has been added to Team Canada at the North American Challenge Cup this summer. It was announced late last week that Lori Layne Kremer will be added to the Canadian Team competing in Edmonton this August. Lori Layne, along with Deanna Matthews, Natasha Fung, Paige Kremer and Mackenzie Lubberding will all be members of Team Canada competing against 2 American Teams and a Team from Mexico.

Mel Zajac Jr International - Meet Recap

May 27, 2008

OSC brought 19 swimmers to Vancouver’s Pacific Dolphin’s Mel Zajac meet this past weekend. This was the largest team from OSC ever at a National level competition. Our team finished 11th overall with the Australians taking top honours with several Olympic Team members. This season’s Mel Zajac meet was significantly faster than years past with the AUS team and Canada’s entire Olympic Team at the meet. We had several swims in the top 16 and top 8 at the meet which bodes well for Senior Nationals in Winnipeg this summer. The meet was swum as an Olympic Prep Meet with evening preliminaries and morning finals. Nationals this summer will be run the same way so it was a valuable experience for our team to swim in this format.

Natasha Fung broke 4 OSC Club Records with her swims in 50m Breast (34.74) and the 100m Breaststroke (1:14.49) in both 13-14 and Open categories. Braeden Newton broke a pair of Open records, 100m Back (1:01.23) and 200m Back (2:09.07). Braeden also led the way with more personal best performances than any other swimmer from OSC.
It was a great meet to see how fast the best in the world can swim ‘in-season’. It was a good lesson to remind our swimmers that to be the best you have to be swimming at your personal best level no matter what the meet or the preparation.

Alberta Summer Games

May 27, 2008

This summer from August 7-10 the Alberta Summer Games will take place in Medicine Hat. This is a great competition for swimmers to get the experience of a multi-sport games very early in their careers. Any swimmer born between 1994-1997 is eligible to try out for their zone team (regardless of speed), and swimmers born between 1991-1993 can try out for their team if they have never achieved a 15-16 ‘A’ time.

Zone teams are split based on where swimmers live and/or train, so OSC has swimmers eligible for two different zones. Swimmers living or training in Edmonton can try out for the Zone 6 team, and swimmers living in surrounding areas (St. Albert, Spruce Grove, etc.) can try out for Zone 5.

The Zone 5 trials will take place June 28 & 29 at Millennium Place in Sherwood Park, and the Zone 6 trials will take place June 22 at the U of A West Pool. Please talk to your coach if you would like to compete in your Zone’s trials competition and we will give you more information about the time and place for the trials. If you have any questions about the Trials or Games themselves talk to your coach or Dave Macdonald.

May 6, 2008

Deanna Matthews and Paige Kremer have been added to Team Canada along with fellow OSC swimmers Natasha Fung and Mackenzie Lubberding.

The meet will be held in Edmonton August 4th to 10th.

3 OSC Swimmers named to Team Alberta for US Grand Prix

April 18, 2008

Based off performances swum at Olympic Trials, Bobbie Mielnichuk, Lori Layne Kremer and Joshua Au will all be representing Alberta at the US Grand Prix Meet in Charlotte, North Carolina in June. The meet is in early June and is host to many of the USA’s best athletes in their preparation for their Olympic Trials.

2 OSC Swimmers named to Team Canada for NACC

April 18, 2008

Natasha Fung and Mackenzie Lubberding have been selected to represent Canada at this summer's North America Challenge Cup. The meet, which was held last summer in Los Angeles, will take place right here in Edmonton between August 4-10, 2008.

Swim-a-thon - Event Recap

May 20, 2008

I would like to thank all who came out and participated in OSC’s Swim-a-thon this year. We had many swimmers come out to swim 5km as fast as possible and some new faces do a great job of their first time through.

The BBQ set up by the Kindrachuk and Boisvert families was a huge hit and the weather for Frisbee couldn’t have been better. It was great to see all the groups swim fast and then come together to play out in the field at Kinsmen.

Our next big team opportunity is June 21st for the OSC Blue vs. White. Please mark that afternoon on your calendars and come out and race in what has become a great inner club competition.

November 25, 2007

Lori Layne Kremer completed the sweep of the 13-14 Girls Butterfly record book! Having set the 50 Butterfly mark at Westerns last spring, and the 100 mark yesterday, her Short Course 200m Butterfly time of 2:16.64 in prelims at Bell Grand Prix on Sunday was over 4 seconds faster than the previous record set by Keyano coach Colleen (Hnatiuk) Marchese, 2:20.72 set in 1989. The swim also has Lori Layne going into her 2nd National A final tonight.

2nd Provincial Record on the day for Deanna Maaaatthews!!

November 24, 2007

Deanna broke the long-standing 15-17 Girls record of Cheryl Gibson, set on February 5, 1977 in Amersfoort, Netherlands. Cheryl, a medalist from the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, set the record as a part of the South Side Swim Club in Edmonton. This is the second 15-17 record broken by Deanna on Day 1 of the Bell Grand Prix in Toronto.

Deanna's time of 2:16.93 was nearly a full second under the old record of 2:17.78. Her final time also placed her 3rd overall in the women's final at the Bell Grand Prix - Deanna's first medal in a Senior National competition. Congratulations, Deanna!

Swim-a-thon at Kinsmen on Saturday, May 17th, 2008

May 13, 2008

Swing your arms and warm up your pencils. It’s time for Swim-a-thon again and this season we are all down at Kinsmen. This season we are going to try to have everybody swim the fastest 5km possible in the two hour time block. We always use some parent volunteers to count swimmer’s laps and get times for the distance.

We will be running our groups through 3 ‘shifts’ with a BBQ in Kin Park at the end. The groupings are as follows:

High Performance and Performance 9:00 – 11:00am
Top Age Group and Junior Age Group 1:00 – 3:00pm
Olympian Way and Junior Olympian Way 3:00 – 5:00pm

The HP/P and TAG/JAG swimmers will be out in the field from 3-5pm playing Frisbee, Soccer or Bacon (don’t ask) until the BBQ cranks up at 5pm and the JOW, OW join us.
Please be sure to inform your coaches if you will not be attending and to bring some clothes and shoes to run in outside.

EKI - Meet Report

May 6, 2008

OSC wins the Edmonton Keyano International!

With another strong team effort from our swimmers OSC has set another “First Ever” by winning the EKI. This was a whole team effort with many of our TAG and JAG swimmers making finals and pushing to the top of the heat.

Some stand out performances were done by Deanna Matthews breaking a 20 year old EKI record in the 200m backstroke and Natasha Fung breaking a former OSC EKI record in the 200m IM. Other great swims were Hanna Lantz making Age Group Nationals in the 1500m Free and Shyla Golly and Arynn deLeeuw both making Provincial A standards.

We had several more OSC Club Records broken with the 12 and under boys leading the way. They broke the 4x100 Medley and Freestyle relays on the weekend (Jordan Aseron, Kyle Aseron, Mackenzie Lubberding and Noah Lubberding). The 15-17 women broke the 200m MR (Deanna Matthews, Aisha Friesen, Lori Layne Kremer and Bobbie Mielnichuk). Deanna Matthews broke her own 50m Back Club Record and Noah Lubberding broke a long standing 10 and Under 800m Free record at the 800m split in his 1500m Free.

Beyond all the records, best times and fast swimming was a team that was very dedicated to swimming well and supporting each other. OSC once again showed great team spirit and blazed the path to the top of the meet by training hard and having fun!

Congratulations to all!

Double Double - Meet Recap

May 6, 2008

Hey Guys! That was an excellent meet for all swimmers!

It was so good to see all the young swimmers get back up on the blocks after such a long competition break. I was very pleased to see everyone get up and attack each and every race.

We also had 3 new 'B' qualifiers in the 400 free; Nikola Srnic, Tyler Wells and Kathryn Legaspi. Way to go guys!! It’s great to see all that hard work in practice paying off! Keep up the awesome work guys!

Now that we are getting into the long coarse season, it’s very important to keep working hard and having fun!  Let's finish off the season with a BANG! And show all our competitors what OSC is made of!

Fountain Park TAG training schedule changes

April 28, 2008

At the start of May every year, our Fountain Park program is forced to reduce by 1 lane to accommodate the Sailfish summer club, which causes our TAG group to be confined to minimal lane space. This year, we have been lucky enough to secure extra lane space for the FP TAG group at NAIT, 4:30-6:30pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from May 5 through June 4, 2008. This space gives TAG the most ideal training environment possible for the month of May, as well as gets the TAG group training alongside the Performance group once per week, on Wednesdays.

All other practices for TAG will remain at the regularly schedule time and pool. Thank you.

Provincial Stroke Camp - Recap

April 25, 2008

Another great camp for the Olympian Swim Club swimmers at the Alberta Provincial Stroke Camp held this past weekend in Grande Prairie. The three strokes that highlighted were Individual Medley (Shaneese Nowlan and Berkley Nowlan), Breaststroke and Distance Freestyle (Paige Kremer, Bruno Sharpe, and Kelly Delorme). Our athletes were once again stand out performers with Shaneese awarded the ‘Leader of the Camp’ and both Paige and Bruno awarded for their dedication and work ethic. Both Berkley and Kelly developed some new skills and I believe are better from the experience. It was very nice to see a few new OSC faces at the stroke camps this season and that they were able to carry on the tradition of excellence while at the camps. Way to go ‘O’ in the end, we had 12 swimmers represented at the stroke camps this season…

OSC Double Double - Officials needed

April 18, 2008

I will need some officials for the upcoming Double-Double swim meet for Saturday April 26th and Sunday the 27th. There will be one session on Saturday beginning at 1:00 PM and two on Sunday (prelim at 9:00 AM with an 8 o’clock warm-up and finals at 4:40 PM with a 3:30 warm-up). We are using one 8-lane pool at Kinsman and we will require timers and stroke and turn for these sessions. The sessions should be only 2 hours in length as we are running only 5 events each day.

You can send your information to me directly at bnowlan@shaw.ca and indicate your preference and qualifications (timer or stroke and turn).

Silver Cup added to Meet Announcements

April 18, 2008

The meet listed on the meet sign up form as “Meet – TBA” on the May 24-25 weekend has changed. We will now be attending the Silver Tide Silver Cup the following weekend, May 31 & June 1. With the 10 and under series on Sunday the 1st, and some swimmers having meets the following 2 weekends, not all swimmers will be competing in both days of the Silver Cup. The coaching staff will be meeting in the coming weeks to decide what will be the best competition schedule for each swimmer. Please check with your swimmer’s coach to see which days they will be competing.

The response that was indicated on the meet form for “Meet – TBA” will be honoured for this competition. If any family would like to change their response either way due to the change in date please contact the office by May 5.

If you have any questions about this competition please contact Dave Macdonald (dave@olympianswimclub.com).

Officials Needed for EKI

April 11, 2008

Keyano Swim Club has asked that we assist with officiating at the upcoming EKI swim meet which goes from Thursday May 1st through to Sunday May 4th. There are two sessions per day (one prelim in the morning and the finals at night) while the opening day (Thursday) has only one evening event. This club really stepped up to the plate and helped OSC with many needed officials at the recent Short Course A’s. It’s our turn to reciprocate. Volunteer points are applicable for any meets that you volunteer for.

If you can help, please click on this link: http://www.eksc.com/v_meetshosted_08EKI.html

You can select a time slot and a position that is suitable for you and sign up electronically. Let’s show them what the OSC spirit is all about.

Far Westerns - Meet Recap

April 11, 2008

10 swimmers from the High Performance, Performance and TAG groups made a trip down to Pleasanton, California last weekend to compete in the Far Westerns SC championship. This is the age group championship meet for northern California and attracts many of the fastest 11-18-year-olds in North America. This year's meet had nearly 1200 swimmers competing over 4 days.

Our swimmers learned a lot about dealing with the elements of an outdoor meet in early spring. Although the afternoons got up to very pleasant temperatures between 18-24 degrees, the mornings were as cold as 6 degrees... not a normal temperature to be walking around in a wet Speedo. Luckily all of our swimmers are pretty bright, and fast learners, and put up incredibly fast times each session of the meet.

OSC came away with 2 major awards:
* Callum Lavoie was named 17-18 male swimmer of the meet for his performances throughout the weekend. Callum finished the meet with 6 gold and 1 silver medal. (Trevor Godley had an outstanding meet and finished 2nd in the same award category).
* The Olympian Swim Club received the 8th place award for top teams at the competition. With only 10 swimmers at the meet, OSC was in tough for this award as all of the teams ahead of our standing had between 16 and 56 athletes competing. OSC was also the only team in the top-8 to score all of their points with individual swims (no relays).

It was a special treat for our 11-14-year-old girls to race against the very best of the same age group from the United States. It was incredibly difficult for our girls to move through to finals, even though all 4 of the OSC girls were easy finalists back home at our Alberta Age Group Provincials. Kristan Kushlyk had an outstanding swim in the 200 Breast to make finals and place 4th, and even still she was less than 1 second from placing 10th and missing the final completely. It was such a valuable experience for these young girls to experience how close it can be sometimes between making a final and just missing the cut.

Overall, the group had a tremendous meet. Converting times from yards to metres, our club had a very high percentage of best times, and most importantly raced well and represented the Olympian Swim Club and Canada proudly.

Way to go, O's!

North/South Dual Meet - Meet Recap

April 11, 2008

The weekend after Age Group Provincials 11 OSC swimmers aged 11 and 12 trained and competed at the Northern Alberta vs. Southern Alberta Dual meet. This camp and meet was selected based off of performances at the Age Group Provincials. Joining them as a Team North coach was Michelle MacNeil, and filling in as a coach for Team South was Dave Macdonald.

The camp started Friday with a pool session including time trials for the 400 free, 200 IM, and 50 dolphin kick. The 400 free produced 4 best times from the OSC swimmers and the 200 IM also had 4 best times. These performances were even more impressive considering they were done right in the middle of training. The 50 kick was also a great event as the O’s showed their skill in this important aspect of swimming. The other half of Friday was a stretching session with a local synchro coach and the swimmers had anthropometric measurements taken. Friday evening everyone came together for team dinner and then enjoyed the movie “Fast and the Furious” which follows Victor Davis and Alex Baumann on their path to the 1984 Olympics.

Saturday morning the swimmers had a workout which included work on using the pace clock, streamlining and breakouts, kicking, and swimming on all 4 strokes. The OSC swimmers did a great job of applying what they were taught and were leaders in many lanes around the pool. After the swim U of A coach Bill Humby gave a talk on the path of swimmers from the 12 and under age to the National level and the National team. Next up National team member Kier Maitland gave a great talk about his experiences growing up and swimming, including what it took for him to get to where he is today.

After this it was Dual Meet time. The swimmers each raced 2 or 3 times individually as well as on 1 or 2 relays. With this many races it was more about putting in the effort to race your best each time than actually achieving best times. Even with this the following OSC swimmers went best times: Monica McDowell (200 back), Hannah Lantz (200 fly), Paige Kremer (200 free), Annika Kamminga (50 back), Aiden Friesen (50 breast), Arynn deLeeuw (50 free, 50 breast), and Jordan Aseron (50 free). In the end it was Team South winning the meet by a mere 6 points and the racing came down to the very last relay!

Over the weekend the OSC swimmers did a great job of listening well, doing their best in every workout, and respecting their teammates and competitors. Hopefully all the swimmers had fun, made some new friends, and learned something that will make them great swimmers for OSC, Alberta, and Canada in the future!

Olympic Trials - Day 6 Recap

April 6, 2008

Final Day from The CN Olympic Trials

The day started with Erik Olson swimming a lifetime best in the 50m Freestyle and Mike Van Denham just over his best. The Men's 200 IM saw Braeden Newton swimming to a four second best time (2:14.69), Nathan Kindrachuk just over his best and Adam Amer with over a second improvement. In the women's 50m Freestyle Bobbie Mielnichuk, Natasha Fung and Shauna O'Toole all swam strong races with Natasha breaking 28 seconds for the first time long course. The women's 200m back was best time swims for Madison Mills, Lori Layne Kremer and Shaneese Nowlan. Deanna Matthews and Lindsay Morton were just over their best on the day. At night the men's 4x100MR broke the Club Record but was disqualified for a fast takeover. They will be sure to swim under the standard at some point this season with how all 4 were looking at the meet.

All in all the OSC swimmers had a very good meet with many best time swims. The long course season got started off with a bang at the Trials and they all know where the target is for the remainder of the season. Canada picked what looks to be the best Olympic Team since 1992 so get ready to watch some very fast Canadian swimming come August... and some very fast OSC swimming by the end of July!!!

Alberta Age Group Provincials - Meet Recap

March 17, 2008

Thirty five 14 and under OSC swimmers came together this weekend at the Kinsmen Sports Centre for the Alberta Age Group Championship along with 300 other swimmers from across the province. The meet was a tremendous success as we saw many of the O’s step up with amazing swims, new qualifying time, club records, best times and many many medals!

One of the biggest highlights of the weekend came Sunday night when Natasha Fung stepped up to the plate in the 200 IM and smashed the National Age Group Record with a stunning 2:16.36. This swim broke the old standard held by Canadian Olympian and former World Record holder Alison Higson. This is the only individual National Age Group record currently held by an OSC swimmer. Congratulations Natasha!

We had two swimmers qualify to attend new National meets this weekend as well. Paige Kremer started it off on the first day with a new Western Canadian Champs qualifying time in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:27.61. At age 11, this is a great accomplishment for Paige! On Saturday Jordan Aseron followed up with an Age Group National standard in the 200 free with a huge drop to 2:14.15. Way to go Jordan!

Club Records also fell in abundance this weekend, and they were as follows: Natasha Fung added 3 more 13-14 records to her collection in the 50 free (26.57), 100 free (57.16), and 200 free (2:03.84), Mackenzie Lubberding broke the 11-12 50 fly twice (30.10 and 29.94) and the 100 fly (1:07.19), and Luke Peddie broke the 50 fly for 13-14’s twice (28.00 and 27.80). On the relay side of things the 10 and under boys (Kyle Aseron, Noah Lubberding, Fred Kamminga, and Josef Legaspi) broke a 12 year old record in the 200 free relay with 2:22.31, the 11-12 boys (Mackenzie Lubberding, Jordan Aseron, Eduardo Gamboa-Araiza, and Noah Lubberding) broke the 400 free relay record by 3 seconds with 4:30.56, and the 13-14 girls (Madison Mills, Natasha Fung, Kristan Kushlyk, and Shannon Johnston) broke the 400 free relay record set last season with a 4:03.34.

There were also two teams selected off of this meet: the 11-12 Northern Alberta vs. Southern Alberta Dual Meet and the 13-14 BC vs. Alberta Dual Meet. On the 11-12 team are Jordan Aseron, Arynn deLeeuw, Aiden Friesen. Eduardo Gamboa-Araiza, Shyla Golly, Annika Kamminga, Paige Kremer, Hannah Lantz, Mackenzie Lubberding, Monica McDowell, and Berkley Nowlan. The names of the swimmers on the BC vs. Alberta team have yet to be announced, but we will post them as soon as we get them. Congratulations to all these swimmers, enjoy the dual meets and learn as much as you can while being part of Team Alberta!

Overall the team placed 2nd in the team standings behind Cascade with a very solid effort from top to bottom. We had 12 different swimmers win individual medals, and nearly every swimmer place in the top 16 in at least one event, a true team effort.

Congratulations to all the OSC swimmers on an amazing weekend, and thanks to all the parents who spent so much time making this meet such a great success for our team and swimming in Alberta.

Sincerely,
The OSC Coaching Staff

Huge Thank-You to all Volunteers!!!

March 17, 2008

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of the OSC members that helped out at the Alberta Provincial Age Group Championships this weekend. Your unbelievable commitment to making this event a success is truly special. This meet was one of the best that OSC has hosted in several years. The feedback received from other club’s parents, coaches, and swimmers was very positive. I would especially like to thank all of the volunteers that acted in chairperson capacities. Your dedication and effort helped make the meet run smoothly and ultimately ensured its success. This weekend was a great example of just how great our club can be when everyone contributes.

I would also like to congratulate all of the OSC swimmers. They are truly wonderful kids both in and out of the water. All of you performed very well and should be extremely proud. Finally, I also wish to thank the entire OSC coaching staff. Carl has assembled an awesome team of dedicated coaches that have amazing abilities to get the best from their athletes. Seeing our coaches prepare their athletes for competitions such as this weekend should inspire confidence in all of us that our club is fast becoming a swimming power in Alberta…GO OSC!

Alberta Senior Provincials - Meet Recap

March 13, 2008

The Olympian Swim Club brought 32 swimmers to Calgary over the March 7th to 9th weekend for the Alberta Senior Provincials. This was the first full Long Course meet of the season for our swimmers and it turned out to be a great one.

OSC finished 4th for the Men’s side of the meet, 2nd for Women’s and 3rd Overall. As a club we continue to move forward at Provincial and National level competitions – our women beat all teams but the University of Calgary.

We had swimmers from several different ‘branches’ of OSC gel together as one unit over the weekend. We had Nicole Shrimpton from JAG at her first ever Senior Provincials with several swimmers from the X group, Performance Group, High Performance group and our UofA athletes all coming together as a team over the 3 days.

Our Chaperones, the Kremers, faced with some definite challenges, did an amazing job of managing the athletes over the course of the weekend. It was a pleasure to know that all of our athletes were very well provided for in Calgary.

Some of the highlights on the weekend were our Women’s 400 IM sweep of the medals with Deanna Matthews (1st), Lindsay Morton (2nd) and Shaneese Nowlan (3rd). Lori Layne Kremer broke the 13-14 girls Club Record in the 50m Butterfly going 29.73, she also won the 200m Butterfly at the meet. Swimmers who were in the medals on the weekend were – Callum Lavoie (400m IM), Joshua Au (200m Fly), Lindsay Morton (200m Fly), Deanna Matthews (200m Backstroke), Dana Armstrong (400m, 800m and 1500m Free), Bobbie Mielnichuk (400m Free) and Lori Layne Kremer (100m Fly). In the Relays we had the women’s 4 x 200m winning 2nd (Dana Armstrong, Bobbie Mielnichuk, Deanna Matthews and Shaneese Nowlan).

This weekend we hand off the torch to our Age Group Provincial swimmers here in Edmonton. Good Luck to you all and see you on the deck!
