OSC's Big Time Performances:

This is a spotlight to recognize exceptional performances by our athletes throughout the swim year. The performances highlighted below are distinct for their National and/or International significance: Senior Club Records, Provincial Records, Provincial and/or National Team Selection, and high performance at Senior National and International competitions.

Deanna Matthews

August 4, 2007

Deanna Matthews broke a 29-year-old Women's Senior Club record in the 200m Individual Medley on Day 3 of the Western Canada Summer Games in Strathcona County, Alberta, on her way to her fourth individual gold medal of the weekend.

Deanna's time of 2:17.53 broke the previous record of 2:18.57, previously held by Becky Smith. Becky Smith is a former National record holder in the Long Course 200 IM, and was a double Bronze medalist at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal in the 400 IM and the 4x100 Freestyle Relay. This was one of the oldest Senior Club Records at the Olympian Swim Club.

Deanna's splits were as follows:

31.03 1:04.26 1:45.12 2:17.53*

Congratulations, Deanna!

Deanna Matthews

August 4, 2007

Deanna Matthews continued to break Women's Senior Club records on Day 2 of the Western Canada Summer Games, this time in the 200m Backstroke.

Deanna made no doubt about the fact she was the backstroker of the meet as she ran away with the gold medal in record time. Her time in finals of 2:14.17 was over 2 seconds faster than her nearest competitor, and also 2 seconds faster than her previous record of 2:16.20 set back in December of this season. This swim puts Deanna only 0.21 seconds away from the 15-17 Girls Provincial record held by Katelyn Murdoch. Great swim, Deanna!

Deanna's splits were as follows:

31.88 1:05.99 1:40.37 2:14.17*

Nathan Kindrachuk

August 4, 2007

Nathan Kindrachuk had a breakthrough swim in his 100m Breaststroke on Day 2 of the Western Canada Summer Games. His time of 1:04.62 in prelims was his first ever senior national qualifying standard, and also broke the 7-year-old Senior Men's Club record of 1:05.03, previously held by Chris Nelson.

In the finals session of Day 2, Nathan made another big drop to finish in 1:04.04. On the day, Nathan dropped over 3 seconds from his previous best time to become a solid senior national swimmer, and in the process earned himself the gold medal at the Western Canada Summer Games! Nathan's splits from finals were as follows:

30.64 1:04.04*

Congratulations, Nathan!

Josh Au

August 4, 2007

Josh Au continued his great swimming on Day 1 of Western Canada Summer Games by breaking the Senior Men's Club record in the 200m Butterfly just moments after setting a club record and earning a silver medal in the 100m Backstroke.

Josh set the record in finals, breaking his own club record set earlier this year. His final time of 2:03.13 was good for a silver medal in the event, and pulls Josh within 1 second of the Provincial Record currently held by 3-time Olympic swimmer and Olympic medalist Tom Ponting. Josh's splits were as follows:

27.84 59.32 1:31.41 2:03.13*

Congratulations, Josh!

Josh Au

August 4, 2007

Josh Au began his Western Canada Summer Games by breaking the Senior Men's Club Record in the 100m Backstroke twice in the same day.

The old record, set by Josh back in December, was 59.37. The new record was 59.18 for less than a day before Josh dropped more than a second off that time in the finals session on Day 1. His final time of 58.05 was good for a silver medal at the Games. His splits in finals were as follows:

28.06 58.05*

Great job, Josh!

Deanna Matthews

August 4, 2007

Deanna Matthews started off her Western Canada Summer Games with a pair of Senior Women's Club records in the 100m Backstroke. Deanna broke the 9-year-old record of 1:04.78 previously held by Colleen Nuc, when she swam 1:04.44 in the preliminaries session on Day 1.

Deanna didn't stop there, however, as she swam another big best time in finals and finished her second 100m Backstroke of the day in 1:03.21. Deanna won gold in the event. Her splits in finals were as follows:

30.98 1:03.21*

Great swimming, Deanna!

Team Alberta
Western Canada Summer Games

August 4, 2007

Western Canada Summer Games were a huge success for Team Alberta, coming within 3 medals of Team BC for tops at the competition.

Highlighting the 45 medals earned by Team Alberta were the 4 swimmers selected to the team from the Olympian Swim Club, who were a part of 13 podium finishes (11 individual & 2 relay). The performances were exceptionally fast, and it was exciting to see the OSC swimmers leading the way for Alberta.

Justin Selner was the first Olympian to swim at the meet, and in his 400 Free placed in the top 8, a placing that he topped in the 1500 Free where he finished in 6th place. Nathan Kindrachuk smashed his own best times, and the competition, by sweeping the golds in the breaststroke events and taking bronze in both IM's.  Josh Au took silver in both butterfly events and added another silver in 100 backstroke. And finally, Deanna Matthews swept the gold medals in all of the backstroke and IM events. Deanna was also a part of a gold medal in the Women's 400m Medley Relay, while Nathan and Josh earned silver medals in the Men's 400m Medley Relay.

On a club note, these 4 swimmers also combined to break 9 Senior Club records. Nathan Kindrachuk broke the 100 Breaststroke record twice, Josh Au broke the 100 Backstroke twice and the 200 Butterfly, and Deanna Matthews broke the 100 Backstroke twice, the 200 Backstroke, and the 200 IM.

Congratulations Justin, Nathan, Josh and Deanna!

13-14 Girls 4x100 Free Relay
July 22, 2007

At the Canadian Age Group National Championships in Montreal, Quebec, the Olympian Swim Club relay team of Lori-Layne Kremer, Natasha Fung, Christine Kemp, and Madison Mills broke a 9-year-old Alberta Provincial Record for the 13-14 Girls 4x100 Freestyle Relay by over 2 seconds. The previous record of 4:06.73 belonged to the Red Deer Catalina Swim Club.

Our girls' splits went as follows:
Lori-Layne Kremer 30.21 1:03.21
Natasha Fung 28.89 1:00.37
Christine Kemp 28.74 1:00.60
Madison Mills 28.86 1:00.30
Provincial Record Time   4:04.48

The new record was a major highlight from the Age Group Nationals, and once again demonstrates just how great these girls are. In fact, the three fastest split times from our girls were only matched by one other 13-14-year-old girl from all the rest of the relay teams at the meet. Great swimming, girls, and congratulations on a new Provincial Record!

Josh Au

July 8, 2007

In the dual for all-time 50 backstroke supremacy in the Olympian Swim Club, Joshua Au struck back at Senior Provincials to reclaim a record that he has traded with current teammate Greg Swain already once this season.

Josh's time of 29.15 was 0.16 seconds faster than Greg's record that was set only one month earlier.

Congratulations, Josh!

Greg Swain

June 3, 2007

One of the newest swimmers in the Performance group is already making his mark on Olympian Swim Club history. At the Kamloops Classic Swim Meet, Greg broke the Senior Men's Club Record in the 50 Backstroke.

Greg's time of 29.31 was 0.05 seconds faster than the record set by Josh Au at Pan Am Games Trials just 2 months ago.

Great swim, Greg!

Team Alberta
AB vs. BC Dual Meet

April 9, 2007

Shannon Johnston, Kristan Kushlyk, Mackenzie Lubberding, Madison Mills, Natasha Fung, Lori-Layne Kremer, and Deanna Matthews were all selected for Team Alberta to attend a Dual Meet versus Team BC in early April. Their selections were based on performances at the Short Course Alberta Age Group Provincials.

Of the 7 athletes, 5 of them received individual awards from the meet / training camp. Madison Mills and Deanna Matthews were named 'Swimmer of the Camp' for their respective age groups, Lori-Layne Kremer and Mackenzie Lubberding received the Team Spirit award for their gender, and Shannon Johnston was named 'Most Positive Teammate" for her age group.

Congratulations, Olympians!

Deanna Matthews

March 30, 2007

In dramatic style Deanna Matthews crushed the Alberta Record for the 13-14 Girls 200m Backstroke, taking the time down by over 2 full seconds. The old record held by Lynette Bayliss (2000) was 2:22.44 – Deanna went 2:20.32 in prelims at Pan Am Trials. Her time was fast enough to place her 9th from morning swims. With just moments before her race was to swim in "B" final, the 8th placed swimmer scratched and Deanna was moved up into the ‘A’ final, for her first ever National A Final swim, a mad dash across the deck, which also meant all race prep was for naught.

If you'd like to watch Deanna's swim, check out this video: Click Here

Deanna's splits went as follows:
33.45 1:08.79 1:44.42 2:20.32*

Josh Au

March 30, 2007

Josh Au broke two club records in one swim Sunday morning at the Pan Am Trials in Victoria. His 100m Backstroke preliminary swim was fast enough at the 50m mark to break the Senior Male club record (29.36) and his final time (1:01.40) was well under the 100m mark.

Josh's splits went as follows:
29.36* 1:01.40*

Lori-Layne Kremer

February 19, 2007

Lori-Layne Kremer shocked her teammates, coaches, parents, and herself with an outstanding swim in the 50 Fly on Day 2 of the Western Championships in Regina last weekend. Her time of 28.66 not only won the B Final, not only qualified her for her first ever Senior National standard, but also broke the Alberta Provincial record for 13&14-year-old girls. The former Provincial record of 28.98 was held by Alexandra Pasemko of RIP.

If you'd like to watch Lori-Layne's swim, check out this video: LoriLayne50fly.wmv

For all the young swimmers out there, make sure you watch how well Lori-Layne times her touch at the turn and finish of her race. It took over a year of dedicated effort in practice to make that skill this good, and it ended up being the difference in setting a new Provincial record and qualifying her for Senior Nationals (not to mention out-touching the girl beside her in lane 3). Congratulations, Lori-Layne!

Josh Au

January 23, 2007

Over the first 2 weeks of January 2007, Josh Au represented the Olympian Swim Club on the Canadian Youth National Team at the Australian Olympic Youth Festival in Sydney, Australia. The competition hosted the best 16-year-old or younger swimmers in the world, with 21 different countries being represented. This was Josh's first opportunity to represent Canada and his home club at an International competition.

Josh fought through the nerves of being on the world stage for the first time admirably well. He swam many of his best events close to best times until the 3rd day of the competition, where he qualified for a Final in the 100m Butterfly and finished in 8th place with a time of 57.77, a personal best.

Congratulations, Josh, on a great meet!

13-14 Girls 4 x 50 Medley Relay

December 10, 2006

The team of Deanna Matthews, Natasha Fung, Lori-Layne Kremer, and Madison Mills, Olympian Swim Club, smashed the 13-14 girls 200m Medley Relay Provincial Record at the PCS Christmas Cracker Meet in Victoria, setting a new time of 2:00.90.

Their splits went as follows:

30.28 1:04.48 1:33.97 2:00.90*

They shattered the previous mark of 2:03.53, which was set by the Edmonton Keyano Swim Club in 2005.

Way to go, Girls!

Deanna Matthews

December 10, 2006

Deanna Matthews, Olympian Swim Club, broke her own Alberta Provincial Record in the Female 13-14 year old 200 Backstroke short course at the PCS Christmas Cracker in Victoria.

Deanna posted the new time of 2:16.20 in the finals session, which also gave her the gold medal in the event. Her splits went as follows:

32.46 1:06.52 1:42.05 2:16.20*

The time broke the 13-14 Girls Provincial Record and the OSC 13-14 Girls & Senior Female Club Record, which Deanna had set only 3 weeks earlier at the Bell Grand Prix in Toronto.

Great job, Deanna!

Deanna Matthews

November 26, 2006

Deanna Matthews continued her attack on the OSC Club Record board with her second Senior Club Record of the weekend at the the Bell Grand Prix in Toronto.

This time Deanna showed a bit of flat out speed in breaking her own 13-14 Age Group & Senior Club Record in the 50m Backstroke.

Her time of 31.14 should be a scary thought for her competitors in the 100 and 200 meter backstroke events.

Congratulations, Deanna!

Josh Au

November 26, 2006

On Sunday at the Bell Grand Prix in Toronto, Josh crushed his previous best time in the 200 Fly twice in the same day. His morning swim of 2:04.22 was actually 0.01 seconds slower than Stephen Badger's Senior Club Record. The morning swim ranked Josh 6th going into finals, and that night Josh took another second off of his morning swim, going 2:03.30 to finish 5th.

His splits went as follows:
28.02 59.58 1:31.37 2:03.30*

Josh's time breaks a 26-year-old club record held by former Canadian National Champion Stephen Badger. His time is also only 1.1 seconds away from former Canadian Record holder and Olympic medalist Tom Ponting's 15-17 Age Group Provincial Record. That's pretty elite company. Congratulations, Josh!

Deanna Matthews

November 24, 2006

In the first session of the first big meet of the year, the Olympian Swim Club already has its first Provincial Record of the season. At the Bell Grand Prix in Etobicoke, Ontario, Deanna Matthews smashed her previous best time in the 200m Backstroke to break not only the OSC Senior Women's Club Record, but also the Alberta 13-14 Girls Provincial Record.

Deanna's swim went as follows:
32.70 1:06.40 1:41.58 2:16.27*

The time broke a 5-year-old Provincial Record of 2:17.04, previously held by Mallory Hoekstra of Keyano. It also broke a 3-year-old Senior Women's OSC Club Record of 2:17.91, previously held by Ifiyenia Koskinas.

Congratulations, Deanna!
