Year-End Pool Report

June 12, 2008

Happy June :)

10 & Under Series #4
Congratulations to everyone who swam at this meet. We saw some really great improvements in dives, turns and swimming strokes. I was really impressed with all the swimmers who did great kicking during their races. One really great skill was the streamlines at the start of the races, we had a number of swimmers start in the lead because of the streamline.
(It is way better to start in front if you can!)

Here are some assorted Highlights
Allison - 8 seconds off in 25 breastroke
McKenna - 7 seconds off in 50 free
Carly - 4 seconds off in 50 free
Dylan - 4 seconds off in 50 back
Connor - 2 seconds off in 25 breast
Danny - awesome first meet going 44 seconds in 50 free
Shae - 4 seconds off in 50 fly
Nic - 35.35 seconds in 50 free
Sarah - 9 seconds off in 50 free, 20 off in fly & 7 off in breastroke (quite the meet Sarah!)
Bryanne - 6 seconds in 50 fly & 11 seconds in 50 breastroke
Emma - had a best time in 50 back and finished all races with correct technique
Kelsey - dropped 5 seconds in her 50 fly
Holly - raced tough and took off 5 seconds in her 50 free
Morgan - dropped 10 seconds in her 50 free, 9 in fly and 12 in breastroke
Jessica - took off 4 seconds in 50 free
Jason - awesome first meet, raced with all skills, way to go
Wyatt - dropped 3 seconds in 50 back and broke 1 minute for breastroke

Blue vs. White - June 21
I look forward to seeing everyone there. Note - no practice on this day

Practice notes
For the last two weeks we will have a couple challenges each day to prepare for next year.

Tips for summer (to get a head start on next year)
#1 stay active - do something active everyday - it does not have to be swimming to stay in shape
#2 watch the Olympic swimming events - This year is shaping up to be the fastest olympics ever - it will be very exciting - set the VCR or PVR to record events if you are going to be away - it will be worth it!
#3 go to a swim camp - there is a local one at U of A that runs for one week - this is a great way to learn from other coaches and meet other swimmers from other clubs

I have really enjoyed coaching all of you this year!

cheers,
KD

April Pool Report

May 6, 2008

Happy May :)

Over the next month or two I sure lots of swimmers and parents will be wondering "What group am I going to be swimming with next year?" I will strive to speak to all of you individually. If you would like to arrange a time, please email me to meet me after a Saturday morning practice.

Penguins #3
Congratulations to Dylan, Sarah, Morgan, Shae, Lily, Emma, Aiden & Nic who all attended this meet. We saw some great streamlines, lots of best times, and some swimmers swimming some new distances for the first time. Congratulations to all who attended.

Skills Coach Course
We had 12 swimmers volunteer to attend a 2 hour practice at NAIT instead of the usual 1 hour practice in St. ALbert on April 26th. Thank you to all the swimmers. The coaches in the course had great things to say about the group!! Way to go...

Swim-A-Thon
This event is a great learning experience for swimmers to challenge themselves to swim a little farther than they thought they could. Our goal is to offer a positive environment and support the swimmer to do as much as they can. If the swimmers can find pledges that are offering a value per lap then usually will try to do a bit more. This will also be a great opportunity to meet some older swimmers. I hope to see you all there.

TURN VIDEO
Here is a nice breaststroke pull-out video so you can learn how to get past the 2nd post!!!

Important Practice Change Notice

April 18, 2008

On the weekend of April 26th I will be running a Level 1 coaching course at NAIT.
Regular practice will be cancelled.

I am inviting all swimmers to attend a special practice at NAIT from 8AM - 10AM on Saturday. The practice will be stroke technique and will give the swimmers a good opportunity to receive 1 on 1 feedback from other coaches.

Please confirm if you can attend as I require at least 12 swimmers to run the session successfully.

cheers,
Kevin Dennis

March Pool Report

April 10, 2008

Howdy All,

A couple things for this month.

SWIM MEETS
Congratulations to all who competed in February. I was very impressed with the number of swimmers who showed what great streamlining practice we have had. I counted at least 7 races at both meets where the JOW swimmer had the fastest start & Streamline. Remember that it is easier to start from ahead! Way to Go!

TURN VIDEO
Since January we have talked a bunch about doing guitar hero butterfly. Here is a nice video that shows someone doing the 1 arm guitar hero. Look how her arm finishes strong past her hips and how she kicks twice per arm pull.

February Pool Report

February 10, 2008

Hey Kids!

Check out this little breaststroke video:

http://www.goswim.tv/drilloftheweek_comments.php?id=5022_0_20_0_C

Please watch the video and watch 3 things...
One Gold Star for whoever tells me about the breaststroke video first!

#1 Remember the streamline thing? Notice how the hands always go back to streamline with a streamlined head.

#2 Also notice how his hands stay in front of his body. (and no, you may not use paddles yet until you are big like him)

#3 Notice how hands go forward fast to streamline. It looks like he wants to get to his streamline quickly.

Good Luck at your swim meets over the next couple weeks

Please check out the link above titled 'JOW Seasonal Outline' to view a generalized plan for JOW this season.

January Pool Report

January 28, 2008

Happy 2008!!!

Welcome to all the new swimmers who have joined JOW to start this year. I am seeing very good swimming so far.

Over the past couple months we have spent lots of time learning to streamline, reading the clock and learning to do some basic swimming skills.

Our next focus will be to learn to do some skills for our swimming strokes.
Remember you cannot forget to STREAMLINE!

Check out this little freestyle video and try to swim like these swimmers during practice.

Have a Merry Christmas!

December 1, 2007

Hey Kids,

Only a couple practices left before the Christmas break - remember the last practice will be on December 13th. I know - I know. Lets try not to cry, we will have lots more swimming next year.

Next Saturday our practice will be from 10-12 - we are going to do something FUN with the OW group called the Mini-Olympics. This FUN event will be good practice for the 10 & Under series meet the next day.

The video this month is a short one but is a very good picture of an open turn (tuck turn) You would do this turn during butterfly, breaststroke and during IM swimming so you might as well learn to do it well!

You have to select the watch the video option from the page for this video.

http://www.goswim.tv/drilloftheweek_comments.php?id=1003_0_20_0_C#

I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Welcome to November

October 18, 2007

Wow - Is it November already?

I am happy to see the improvements everyone is making in the pool and as we learn a few more of the basics we are getting ready to do some even more fun stuff. (surprises ahead?)

While I am not going to say the word Streamline 100 times in this note I still may - It is important. The attached video shows what you are trying to build up to. The easiest of skills saves you the most time in the pool.

I will see everyone at the pool - Cheers!

JOW Swimmers & Parents

October 18, 2007

Hello OW Swimmers and Parents,

I just wanted to let you know about a change to next Saturday morning practice, it will be from 10-12pm.

As everyone is aware, the first 10 & Under Series swim meet is on Sunday, October 21, 2007 and Madison, Maciek and I have decided to run a "practice swim meet" during Saturday's workout. This will give everyone an opportunity to be comfortable with the swim meet environment.

There will be 3 groups participating, JAG, OW and JOW and we ask everyone to be there from 10-12pm.
If anyone is unable to make it, please inform me prior to Saturday.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hello all JOW swimmers!

All great swimmers find ways to go faster than their competition and this is the first step; so whenever you push off the wall make it look like this video.

Reminder - We will be having a practice meet before the 10 & under series meet on October 20th. Practice will be from 10-12.
