June Pool Report |
June 24, 2008 |
Well, here we are, right in the middle of the championship meet
season. Each and every one of you has a lot of different things
going on, and you must be prepared to do your best in every area.
Be sure to keep up on your studying during this last part of the
school year. It is important to be able to balance your school and
swimming life, so be sure to stay on top of things.
There are several meets coming up which you also need to be prepared
for. Be sure to:
1. Eat healthy.
2. Drink plenty of water.
3. Get plenty of rest.
4. Wear sunscreen if you are going outside.
5. Do your best in every workout, making sure you are hitting the
daily goals each time.
6. Be at every workout. Time is running out!
The following meets are approaching quickly:
1. Age Group Provincials
2. Age Groups Nationals
3. Far Westerns
4. North American Challenge Cup
5. Alberta Summer Games
A special congratulations goes out to Georgia Fetzko for qualifying
for her first ever Age Group Provincials, and Mackenzie Lubberding,
who broke his first ever Provincial record in the 50m Butterfly in a
stellar time of 29.69! |

May Pool Report |
May 9, 2008 |
What a fantastic start we have had to the long course season thus
far. Congratulations goes out to Paige Kremer, who has been selected
to join her teammate Mackenzie Lubberding at the North American
Challenge Cup to be held in August. These two are the youngest ever
OSC swimmers to be selected to represent Canada on a national team.
Wow!
FP TAG has also seen a new Age Group National qualifier, Hannah
Lantz, who made the 1500 Free standard by a whopping 15 seconds.
Hannah joins the group with Paige, Berkley, Mackenzie and Jordan who
will head off to Calgary in July. This is the largest group
representing TAG in a few years. Way to go!
Finally, on the performance side of things, Berkley, Paige and
Mackenzie have all made their Top 10 qualifying standards, and
Jordan has made the Top 25 standard. Fantastic work!
A few reminders for the month:
- We will be attending Silver Cup at the end of the month.
- The TAG group will be involved in a mini "Training Day" with the
members of the Silver Tide Swim Club on Saturday, May 24th. We will
be having our regular workout at NAIT from 10 - 12, followed by a
fun activity (yet to be determined) and a second practice at Kinsmen
from 3 - 5 with the STSC group. This will be a fantastic opportunity
to sharpen some skills while training with kids of the same level
from another team. It should make for an exciting day!
- It is EXTREMELY important this time of year to be at every workout
possible. There is not that much time in the season left, and every
missed workout means a missed opportunity to make something better.
- A positive attitude is crucial! Whining and complaining don't only
make the workout worse for you, but for the other people around
trying to do a great job of the sets. Yes, you may feel tired and
sore, but that is normal on a swimmer's journey to success.
On that note, average swimmers gripe and whine, miss practices, and
give half efforts, whereas GREAT swimmers do everything that they
can, despite fatigue and discomfort, to reach their goals. Don't
sell yourself short - be a GREAT swimmer!
See you at the pool! |

April Pool Report |
April 17, 2008 |
Welcome to the long course season! I am very excited for this second
half of the season, and I cannot wait to see all of the skill and
stroke work in action at the meets.
We will be continuing to focus on our skills, most notably, our
turns and streamlines, throughout the month of April. I have already
seen a vast improvement, but again, here are a few reminders of what
we are working on:
1) Strong and efficient dolphin kicks off the wall
2) Heads down on the turns (you do NOT need to stare lovingly at the
wall)
3) Control of your breathing between the flags and the wall.
4) Pace control, pace control, pace control
We will soon shift to our "Deconstruction/Reconstruction" phase of
this cycle. Be prepared to overhaul your strokes, to make them even
more efficient and faster for the long course season. Remember that
you need to train smarter and do the right things to correct your
strokes in order to reach you goals. Training hard in the wrong ways
will limit how fast you can be. Break your bad habits now!
I would like to extend a huge WELCOME at this time to our two new
step-up swimmers, Eduardo Gamboa-Araiza and Monica McDowell. Be sure
to help these two feel comfortable and help them out whenever you
can. And in the opposite of this, a good-bye to Elodie Maunder and
Katelyn MacLeod, who will be moving into Performance starting on
April 21. The best of luck ladies! We will miss you!
To conclude, a reminder that we will start dryland activities the
week of the 21st. Below are your groups for the next month, and the
days your groups will be doing dryland.
Group 1
Lubes
Jordan
Matt
Berk
Paige
Stephanie
Group 2
Grace
Katrina
Caitlin
Hannah
Georgia
Sam
Monday, Wednesdays – Group 2
Tuesday, Fridays – Group 1
Saturdays – Both groups
*Please bring shoes and OSC clothing for dryland.
I will give you a handout with the exercises for each day in the
very, very near future.
See you at the pool! |

March Pool Report |
March 3, 2008 |
Welcome to March (and hopefully a nice warm spring!). We are already
less than two weeks out of the largest meet of the season so far,
and I know that many of you are ready to race like you've never
raced before!
But to start, congratulations goes out to Sam Ferland and Georgia
Fetzko, who swam fantastic races at Age Group Trials. Both girls had
huge best times in many events, and are well on their way to doing
even better in the long course season.
With being two weeks out of a huge meet, it is essential to remember
a few important things:
1. Get some sleep!! Be sure to maintain a regular sleeping pattern
and get a minimum 8 hours of sleep. You need to be ready for long
sessions at the pool for 3 days, so rest up now!
2. Eat well!! Don't forget to eat all those healthy foods to store
(and use) good energy for your training and your racing. Cut down or
eliminate those unhealthy choices going into the meet.
3. Train well!! Be sure to follow all of your coach's instructions
to ensure that you are ready to race at your best.
4. Make good changes!! Remember that if you keep doing the same old
things, you'll keep getting the same old results.
5. Next Thursday's Workout (March 13)!! Will be from 4 - 6 rather
than our usual morning practice (To give you that little bit of
extra sleep!)
6. Have some goals in Mind!!! Know what you want to accomplish and
how you are going to do that!!
Good luck to everyone next weekend and see you at the pool! |

February Pool Report |
February 20, 2008 |
The championship meet season is quickly approaching. You have all
done a fantastic job of training – working on your weaknesses,
continuing to improve your strengths, and beginning to do new stroke
techniques and skills that you were unable to do before. Wow!
This time of the year can be tough. It is dark outside for longer
than you would like, report cards and midterms are happening at
school, and nasty cold and flu bugs are circulating at both school
and at the pool. Your health is my biggest concern at this point.
Unfortunately, many swimmers in our group have caught some form of
‘bug’ over the last little while. Be sure to keep yourselves healthy
by eating well, drinking water, washing your hands frequently, going
to bed early, and avoiding contact with people who aren’t feeling
well. Yes, it’s hard to avoid ill family members, or friends at
school, but do your best to keep yourself in tip top shape. Remember
that B’s and A’s are quickly approaching and that these are the
biggest meets of the season for you.
Finally, once you are feeling better, it is imperative that you keep
yourself that way, and make the most of your training. We only have
six practices a week, and missing even one per week means that you
have missed approximately 17% of your training for that week. That
really adds up over a month, and especially the year. You need to be
at practice!
Keep focused over the next few weeks, and you will achieve all of
your goals for your big meets! |

December Pool Report |
December 11, 2007 |
It's hard to believe that three months of the season have already
come and gone, and that we have already competed in two of the
biggest meets of the season up to this point. Words cannot explain
the pride I feel towards this group, and there have been so many
stellar performances up to this point in the season. I would like to
list some of my memorable performances from the TAG group up to this
season.
TAG Top Performances of the SC Season (September to December)
1. Mackenzie Lubberding’s Club Record in the 100 Fly at PCS
Christmas Cracker (1:07.78)
2. Paige Kremer’s first ever Age Group National time in the 1500m
Free (19:25) at PCS Christmas Cracker
3. Katrina Sharpe’s 400m Freestyle (4:52) at PCS Christmas Cracker
4. Caitlin Kamminga’s new A Time in the 800 Free (10:14) at JP Fiset
5. Matt Ricioppo’s new A time in the 100m fly (1:08) at PCS
Christmas Cracker
6. Jordan Aseron’s 100m Free (1:03) at PCS Christmas Cracker
7. Berkley Nowlan’s 1500m Freestyle (19:11) at PCS Christmas Cracker
8. Hannah Lantz’s 100m Butterfly (1:25) at JP Fiset
9. Katelyn MacLeod’s 400m IM (5:49) at PCS Christmas Cracker
10. Georgia Fetzko’s 200m Backstroke (2:49) at PCS Christmas Cracker
11. Grace Tworek’s 200m Backstroke (2:56) at PCS Christmas Cracker
12. Elodie Maunder’s 200m Backstroke (2:39) at JP Fiset
13. Sam Ferland’s 800m Freestyle (11:35) at JP Fiset
In addition to performances in the pool, the TAG Group has had many
memorable events throughout the season. Here are a few of my
favourite moments:
1. Matt “Jigsaw” Ricioppo and his PCS shave down.
2. Georgia Fetzko ‘calibrating’ herself during the 5000m Swim.
3. The burned popcorn incident at PCS.
4. The “Commit to Try” program.
5. My laugh attack at JP Fiset. I couldn’t breathe! Thanks Georgia!
6. Paige nearly knocking me over after her 1500 m free at PCS.
7. The names missed in highlighting and the committee that formed
out of it (Co-founders = Grace and Georgia)
8. And many many more I cannot seem to remember at this given
moment. (Let me know and I will add them to the list)
On the more serious sides of things, we are quickly approaching the
holiday season. A few reminders for the upcoming weeks.
1. Training Break (Dec 14-26) – Be sure to stay fit during this
time. Maintain a similarly structured day to the swimming schedule –
go to bed at a regular hour, don’t oversleep, and stay active during
the day. Relaxing is good, but you still need to do some activity in
order to be in good shape when you return for Christmas camp.
Finally, less exercise means swimmers need to eat less. Feel free to
enjoy some holiday foods, but do so in moderation.
2. Christmas Camp update:
a. Start back up on December 27th, 2007.
b. Schedule will include both single and two double practice days. Exact
schedule TBD shortly. I will email this out ASAP.
Enjoy your last week of swimming and school, and have a restful and
enjoyable Christmas season.
See you at the pool! |

November Pool Report |
November 6, 2007 |
|
It has been a month of challenge and hard work over
the past month over at Fountain Park. The TAG group has been busy
making themselves better technically, stronger physically, and
tougher mentally. I am predicting HUGE things for all of the
swimmers in the upcoming Poppy, JP Fiset, and the PCS Christmas
Cracker swim meets, in addition to what will be coming up in the new
year.
What I have been most impressed with has been the swimmers'
dedication to improving their skills. Our work on breakouts has been
fantastic, with everyone striving for 8 dolphin kicks, also known as
"8D's", off every wall - on every repeat. Our new award, "The
Twilight Zone" award, so beautifully named by Matt, is helping take
our breakouts to 'the eighth dimension' (once again, thanks to
Matt). Our current Twilight Zone scores for the month of October are
as follows:
Lubes - 4
Caitlin - 4
Grace - 3
Jordan - 3
Katelyn - 3
Berk - 2
Elodie - 2
Matt - 2
Hannah - 2
Paige - 2
Georgia - 1
Katrina - 1
Scores will continue to be tallied up through November. Keep
training hard and strive to win the monthly Twilight Zone award.
I am also thoroughly impressed with our recent showing at the 5 km
Short Course swim at NAIT, and again at FP. I was so happy to see
many of the swimmers utilize these underwater kicks during this
grueling challenge. Times for the swim are as follows:
Berk - 1:12:57
Lubes - 1:13:30
Katelyn - 1:13:50
Jordan - 1:14:20
Katrina - 1:14:45
Caitlin - 1:15:12
Paige - 1:15:19
Elodie - 1:18:02
Hannah - 1:18:34
Matt - 1:19:08
Grace - 1:21:02
Sam - 1:22:37
Georgia - 1:22:39
A special congratulations goes out to Grace Tworek who bravely and
strongly completed her 5K after her cap AND goggles fell off at the
2000m mark! Way to go Grace! That is some tough swimming!
Let's be sure to keep up the tough work and the tough training
attitudes everyone! All of what I have been seeing can only lead up
to amazing things for you this season!
A few reminders:
1) Water Bottles - Yes, I sounds like a broken record every
day/week/month, but bring some water to keep hydrated in workout.
You will perform better!
2) Hats, Winter Coats, Scarves, Etc. - Unfortunately that terrible
word, winter, is approaching, and it is starting to get quite chilly
outside, and we want to avoid getting the flu, colds, and anything
else that makes us feel terrible.
3) Keep up the amazing work and stay focused on your job - which is
to train hard and swim fast!
See you at the pool, and remember that I am so proud of you this
year (even when I am being really tough on you!)

Georgia Fetzko
Caitlin Kamminga
Paige Kremer
Hannah Lantz
Mackenzie Lubberding
Jordan Aseron
Grace Tworek
Katrina Sharpe
Berkley Nowlan
Samantha Ferland
Katelyn MacLeod
I am so excited for all of the wonderful things that I know are
going to happen this season. I believe that this group will always
strive to be the best, and will perform to their most consistent
every time they hit the blocks.
Just a few starts up things to remind you about:
- WATER BOTTLES - most of you are pretty good at remembering, I
think we are averaging 10/13 water bottles per workout. Be sure to
bring them to keep yourself well hydrated and avoid headaches and
cramps
- GET FIT FAST WEDNESDAYS - We will be doing circuit training every
Wednesday night for the majority of the short course season. We will
also be doing activities prior to Saturday morning workouts. Be sure
to bring an extra towel so you have a dry one after workout.
- ATTENDANCE - WE are sitting at a very high attendance percentage
up to this point, with many people easily at 100%. Keep up showing
up! Attendance at workouts is one of the best and easiest ways to
make yourself a better swimmer! IF you do need to miss due to
illness, etc. please email me at
olympiancoach@gmail.com
or leave a message on my cell at 218-4365.
- HOME OPENER - This weekend.
12 and Unders - Warm-up at NAIT 4:15 Friday, Practice at Kinsmen 9 -
11 Saturday
13 and Overs - Warm-up at NAIT 4:15 Friday, Warm-up 7:45 NAIT
Saturday
-I will be beginning to use the FP TAG Home page on a more regular
basis for announcements, pictures, etc. Be sure to check regularly!
Have a great October and see you at the pool! |
