June Pool Report

June 20, 2008

We have done a lot of test sets this season, and the results are now posted on this page (above). Check out how much you have improved over the course of this season, the results may surprise you. Great job guys!

May Pool Report

May 6, 2008

So after the past two meets I was looking at how much the Scona JAG’s have improved and needless to say I was astonished with what I found! I’m going to share a few stats with you (I love stats!) that will hopefully show how well we have improved.

The first stat for each meet is long course best times. This simply means being faster than you have ever been long course. The second is beating your converted time. Short course swimming is faster because of the greater number of turns, so adding 2% to the time for long course makes them about the same. The third stat is absolute best times. This means second-for-second being faster than your short course time.

Double Double
Long Course Bests – 26 of 26 swims (100%)
Converted Bests – 16 of 26 swims (62%)
Absolute Bests – 12 of 26 swims (46%)

EKI
Long Course Bests – 24 of 24 swims (100%)
Converted Bests – 19 of 24 swims (79%)
Absolute Bests – 13 of 24 swims (54%)

Going absolute best times or converted best times at this time of the season is an amazing accomplishment, and by looking at the numbers we had LOTS of amazing swims. Keep up the great work!

April Pool Report

April 7, 2008

Well the Long Course season is now upon us, and with that comes the time to set new goals for yourself. Look back on how you did during the short course season, and decide how fast you want to go during the long course one! Here are a few tips on setting your goals:

1. Know your best times. You need to know where you are before you decide where you want to go and how you’re going to get there.

2. Set high goals, but realistic ones. Aiming for Senior Nationals may not be possible for a 10 or 11 year old, but what about Age Group Nationals? Or how about the A time in the Age Group above you? Don’t be afraid to shoot for the moon. Even if you miss you’ll end up among the stars (cheesy line, but it’s true!)

3. Make a timeline for achieving your goal. What meet do you want to try to achieve your goal at? And what happens if you miss your goal? What other meets do you have to attempt to reach the goals?

4. Figure our what will help you get there. Is it skills (starts, turns, underwaters, etc)? Is it improving your kick? Is it staying healthy? Knowing what you can improve will give you something to work on each and every workout. If you don’t know what you can improve, just ask me and I will let you know which areas you can make the biggest improvement in.

5. Finally, remember the process. To go fast you need to do the things that make you fast! Train and race with great technique, great skills, and consistency. Use time standards as motivation, but remember the process of what will make you fast!

Good luck to all of you!

Dave

March Pool Report

March 5, 2008

The past month has been hectic for me with travel to Lethbridge, Victoria, and Calgary, but I want to start by commending the Scona JAG’s on the great job they did a swimming workouts with fill in coaches or the Performance group. I hear “Drag-a-JAG” was real tough! Swimming without your usual coach isn’t an ideal situation, but if you can do it well then you can still keep getting better even when your coach has to be away.

Now let’s talk about the meets!

First we had Lethbridge. Shyla and Rachel were at this meet and did a great job. Shyla went 6-for-6 in best times, and Rachel was 5-for-6, along with swimming a great leg on a 15 and over relay!

Next up was 10 and under series, and Alice did awesome trying our new strategy of kicking far underwater on every wall. It didn’t always result in a best time, but she learned a lot about how to use those underwaters!

Two weeks later it was the Alice show again as we traveled to Age Group Trials in Calgary. She was amazing in this meet going best times in all 6 events, making her first ever A time in the 100 fly, and by winning the 50 back earned her way to Age Group Provincials!

This past Saturday we had the Blue and White Time Trial. This was a great tune-up for racing as we have A Provincials two weeks later, and the girls really rose to the occasion. This was Arynn’s first racing since December and she didn’t disappoint with a best in 100 back by 1 second and 400 free by 33 seconds (which was also an A time). Rachel raced the big guns (High Performance girls) in her first ever 400 im and didn’t disappoint going a stellar 6:29.99, and also dropped 4 seconds in 200 im to 3:09. Shyla had an awesome 50 fly of 38, a drop of almost 2 seconds, and was also a star in the underwater 25 dolphin kick, placing second in the 12 and under category at 18 seconds. Last but not least, Alice kept her hot streak going dropping 4 seconds in the 100 breast, and then 21 seconds in the 400 free!

This month may have been really busy, but it was also really FUN! Keep up the great work in practice and let’s have fun and race fast at A’s!

Pool Report

January 22, 2008

Well Christmas Camp has come and gone and now we are back to the regular swing of things.

This past weekend’s Blue Bears was a great meet for the group. With a total of 19 best times out of 21 swims we really couldn’t have asked for a better meet! Some definite highlights were Alice dropping loads of time in her fly events (8 seconds in the 100!) which is setting her up nicely for Age Group Trials, Rachel making 2 more A times in 50 and 100 free, and nearly missing the 200 im cut, and Shyla making the 200 breast and 1500 free A times for the first time this season.

I think a huge difference has been made in the group based on a couple of big improvements since the Christmas break. The first is dryland! Everyone is looking stronger and stronger, and the technique of the exercises is constantly getting better. We will continue with the daily dryland all the way to provincials and the increases in strength will really help you swim faster! The second great improvement has been the quality of practice. It’s one thing to come in every day and swim up and down the pool, but it’s another thing to swim as fast as you can and with the best skills you can. I’ve seen such great improvements in these areas and I’m sure if these things keep up we will have some great swims in the months ahead.

I’ll leave you with a few tips that I have repeated many many times recently. Keep these in mind every time you come to workout:

1. Push off with POWER!
2. Push off in a TIGHT streamline!
3. Always KICK in freestyle!
4. Swim with your HEAD STILL in backstroke!
5. Enter in STREAMLINE on your starts!

See you on deck!

November Report

November 8, 2007

Hey Folks,

Seems like the time is just flying by this season and we’re already at November! The training we’ve done this year so far has been really great, with every swimmer already going times in workout that they couldn’t go last year. Awesome job!

This past Saturday we did a 1500 freestyle for time which was the Tiny Olympic Prospects (TOPS) swim for Alice and Rachel, and a good test for Shyla and Arynn. The results were really good, and here is a comparison to where we were last year at this time:

Alice was 29:24 for her 1500 (averaging 1:57 per 100) whereas last year she was 18:09 for 800 (averaging 2:16 per 100). That’s 19 seconds better per 100 than last year, and the distance is almost twice as long!
Shyla was 25:02 on Saturday and last November she was 28:04. Over 3 minutes of improvement!
Arynn went 24:27 for her 1500 and last November she was 28:13. Almost 4 minutes of improvement!
Rachel’s 1500 was 27:08, which is very solid for her first time completing the distance, especially for someone who was so nervous before starting!

We’ve also been doing a lot of test sets over the past few weeks, and I’ve posted the results of those tests here on our group page (see the link above). Check them out and see where you’ve improved the most, and find out where you still have some work to do. Overall the swims have been really good, and the times that are being posted are showing me that we have some amazing swimming coming up this season.

Keep working hard and really enjoy the process of getting better every day and every week. That’s what swimming is all about – little improvements all the time that in the end will make you a way better swimmer!

See you on deck,

Dave
